Tennis Adds Pair of Wins Tuesday in Orlando

Sharks take down Grand Valley State and Coe.

MATCH ONE | MATCH TWO

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.
The Nova Southeastern tennis team (6-3) earned two victories to its schedule Tuesday at Sanlando Park. The Sharks first defeated Grand Valley State (14-5), 6-3, before defeating NCAA Division III Coe (14-2), 9-0.

MATCH ONE

The Sharks earned a high profile victory to start the day over Grand Valley State, a team that was preseason nationally ranked and has been a staple in the NCAA Tournament for the last decade. NSU started the match by grabbing all the momentum in doubles play, winning every match. Sabrina Kierberg (So., Berlin, Germany) and Alex Kaeser (Fr., Woodstock, Ga.) defeated Lexi Rice and Carola Orna, 8-2, in the top flight. The duo has become a strong No. 1 draw in doubles play and are 4-1 on the year.

Alexandra Johansson (Jr., Sydney, Australia) and Charlotte Cote (Jr., Montreal, Canada) also coasted to a win in doubles play, defeating Leah Dancz and Kali Phillips, 8-2. NSU completed the doubles sweep with a win in the third draw, as Juliet Serabian (So., Plantation, Fla.) and Linda Kornienko (So., Fort Myers, Fla.) defeated Kelly Trapp and Kristina Lucas, 8-6.

NSU split singles play with Grand Valley State, which was all the Sharks needed to earn the win. Johansson and Kierberg earned wins over Rice and Phillips in the top two draws. Johansson won, 6-1, 6-7 (3-10), 10-6, and Kierberg finished with a score of 6-4, 6-2. Cote earned the Sharks final point in the fourth draw against Niki Shipman, 6-0, 7-6 (10-6).

NSU took a few lumps, beginning with Carlee Rizzolo's (So., Livingston, N.J.) third-flight loss to Dancz in a close match, 6-3, 7-5. Serabian lost to Orna, 6-3, 6-0, while Kornienko lost to Trapp, 6-1, 6-1.

MATCH TWO

NSU won its fourth straight match to end the day with a perfect 9-0 victory over the Coe Kohawks.

NSU used the same doubles lineup from earlier in the day and got the same 3-0 result. Kierberg and Kaeser took down Tai Lucero and Jordan Ferree, 8-3. Johansson and Cote defeated Laura Birky and Diannah Watson, 8-5. Kornienko and Serabian won over Tamara Washington and Sarah Lasecki, 8-5.

Johansson earned her second singles win of the day over Lucero, 6-2, 6-0. Kierberg extended her undefeated season to 9-0 against Amy Sebastian, 6-0, 6-2. Rizzolo returned to the win column against Ferree, 6-4, 6-2.

Cote finished a perfect day by defeating Birky in the fourth draw, 6-1, 6-1. NSU made adjustments to the bottom of the lineup and earned two wins in the fifth and sixth flights. Bianca Roberts (Jr., Tampa, Fla.) defeated Watson, 6-2, 6-3. Iryna Serdyuk (So., Boca Raton, Fla.) earned a victory over Elizabeth Hoffman, 6-0, 6-1.

NSU will return home after winning four matches in a row to take on Ave Maria Friday at 3 p.m. Kamryn Blackwood (Sr., Farmington, N.M.) will be honored prior to the match during senior day festivities.
