Swimming's Abner Participates in NCAA Leadership Symposium

Abner attended three-day event in Charlotte

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern University swimming and diving assistant coach Kelly Abner recently took part in the 2014 Women's Leadership Symposium in Charlotte, North Carolina, co-hosted May 19-21 by the NCAA and National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators.

Abner, who has been the swimming program's graduate assistant for the last two years, was one of a select few women in sport from all NCAA divisions chosen to participate in the symposium. The event is designed for "women aspiring to or just beginning a career in intercollegiate athletics."

"I was honored to receive the opportunity to attend the 2014 NCAA/NACWAA Women's Leadership Symposium," said Abner. "The program's main objectives are to initiate personal branding, leadership, Title IX, diversity and career advancement in women working in intercollegiate athletics administration. I had the opportunity to participate in many professional workshops and experienced several educational resources that expanded my networking and advancement as a successful woman in athletics."

Upon returning, Abner recalled four key words used as part of a motto for the event – strong, inspire, resilient, passionate – and received a DiSC Assessment that identified her leadership style. She was also offered tips on cover letter and resume writing as well as interviewing.

This year's event was the 14th WLS since it began in 2001, at that point for women solely from within the Horizon League. Two years later, it expanded to include participants from all levels of the NCAA, and in 2013, the NACWAA joined the efforts to oversee the event's programming. The mission of the WLS is to provide an educational program to facilitate the recruitment, retention, and support of women in intercollegiate athletics.

"The NCAA/NACWAA Women's Leadership Symposium is a professional development opportunity that is extremely close to my heart, as I attended it as a young administrator," said Associate Athletic Director/SWA Kelley Kish. "We are thrilled that Kelly had the chance to represent NSU, grow and develop. This is an honor for Kelly and we are proud of her, plus I know it will impact all at NSU as she shares her experiences and refines her leadership skills."
