Volleyball Sweeps Both Opponents in Day One of Eckerd Tournament

Sharks go to .500 on the season after winning six straight sets.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern volleyball team (3-3) went undefeated on their first day of play in the Eckerd College Tournament against the Chadron Eagles (3-0, 25-22, 25-12, 25-22)  and University of Puerto Rico- Rio Piedras (3-0, 25-20, 25-22, 25-19).

The six-set sweep marks the first time the Sharks have won back-to-back matches in a day since Sept. 6, 2013.

Chadron

The Sharks swept the Eagles, 3-0 (25-22, 25-12, 25-22), in their first match of the Eckerd College Tournament. The win marks Coach Jennifer King's first sweep at NSU.

The Sharks started the opening set strong, holding the Eagles to a two-point deficit until the 17-15 mark. Back-to-back kills by the Eagles were the first two of six points scored in a row, advancing them to a 20-17 lead. The Sharks responded to Chadron's run and regained the lead in the last points of the set.  With the Eagles leading the score, 22-19, Caitlin Donahue (Jr., Miami, Fla.) slams a ball down the middle to bring the Sharks within one. Kaelyn Brock (Fr., La Quina, Calif.) serves an ace to bring the Sharks to one, as an Eagle's error tied the score at 22. Three Eagle errors in a row closed the game for the Sharks to win the first set, 25-22.

NSU excelled in the second set, allowing the Eagles to only come within five points for the entire stanza. The Sharks had two seven-point runs in the set, holding their greatest margin at 13, the biggest lead the Sharks have had in a set this season. The Sharks saw their first 13 point lead after scoring seven straight points early. Pyles started the run on a point, followed by Dana Holger (Jr., Lino Lakes, Minn.), Donahue and Sydney Cook (Jr., Miami, Fla.) to take NSU to 17-4. The Eagles managed to post four points, bringing the score to 17-8, before the Sharks created their second 13 point lead in the match on kills from Holger, Cook and a service ace by Donahue. Brock closed the set for the Sharks, 25-12.

In the final set, the Sharks were behind early until two Eagles errors tied the game at 14. On two Chadron errors, NSU advanced by two. A service ace from Johnson capped the scoring drive and put NSU up with a 17-15 lead.  A season-high five straight kills by Donahue, Katie Pyles (So., Denver, Colo.), Holger, Cook and Brock closed the match for the Sharks at 25-22.

UPR- Rio Piedras

Cook scored the first point of the match on a kill to the left corner. The Sharks maintained a three point lead in the rest of the set before Cook  closed it on a kill, 25-20.

The Sharks began the second with an early, 5-3 lead before the Gallitos rallied five to top the Sharks, 8-7. The teams battled it out until Cook and Devyn Main (Fr., Port Charlotte) ended the fight with the block of the night to push the Sharks up, 14-13. After maintaining a three point lead in the majority of the game, UPR tied the game for the third time at 21 and threatened to win the set. However, the Sharks went on a clutch 4-1 to avoid the loss and pull through for the 25-22 win.

The Sharks held a steady lead in the third set and cruised, with the biggest margin coming at 21-13. The defense held Rio Piedras to six more points, allowing NSU to close the match, 25-19.

The Sharks will close out the Eckerd College Tournament on Saturday, with matches against Daemen at 12:45 p.m. and Queens (N.C.) at 5:15 p.m.
