Swimming and Diving Splits With FSC, Women Remain Undefeated

The Sharks swim eight NCAA provisional times on Senior Day.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University swimming and diving teams welcomed the Florida Southern Mocs for a dual meet in which they split, winning on women's side by a score of 157.5-104.5 and falling to the Mocs on the men's side by a score of 143-119.
 
In the first event of the day, the women's 200-yard medley relay, NSU's A-team, consisting of Emma Wahlstrom (So., Stockholm, Sweden), Malin Westman (Fr., Harryda, Sweden), Emma Lawrenz (Sr., Mennetonka, Minn.) and Jordan Shows (Fr., Alta Loma, Calif.) swam a time of 1:46.76, good enough for a first-place finish. The men's A-team, consisting of Marco Aldabe (So., Alicante, Spain), Anton Lobanov (Fr., Novosibirisk, Russia), Thiago Sickert (So., Vila Velha, Brazil) and Magnus Lundgren (Sr., Stockholm, Sweden), followed with a second-place finish in the their 200-medley relay, swimming a time of 1:31.90.
 
The next two events were the men's and women's 1000-yard freestyle. Madison Yelle (Fr., Mansfield, Texas) was the top finisher for the Sharks on the women's side, swimming a fourth-place time of 10:52.28. Yelle was followed by Blake Woodrow (Fr., Fort Myers, Fla.), who swam a second-place time of 9:44.54 on the men's side. The next two events were the men's and women's 200-yard freestyle in which Bryndis Hansen (So., Akureyri, Iceland) and Shane Kleinbeck (Sr., San Antonio, Texas) each swam first-place times of 1:55.17 and 1:40.14, respectively.
 
In the women's 100-yard backstroke, Wahlstrom took first place, swimming a time of 58.21. She was followed by Aldabe who swam a second-place time of 51.24 in the men's 100-backstoke. NSU would then sweep the men's and women's 100-yard breaststroke as Westman and Lobanov each took first place. Westman swam a time of 1:05.88, while Lobanov swam a NCAA provisional time of 55.42. Lawrenz would follow with a win in the women's 200-yard butterfly, swimming a time of 2:12.67. Thomas Rutherford (Fr., North Port, Fla.) trailed her with a second-place finish in the men's 200-butterfly, swimming a time of 1:54.48.
 
The last two events before the first break were dominated by Hansen and Sickert. Hansen swam a NCAA provisional time of 23.85 in the women's 50-yard freestyle, while Sickert swam a NCAA provisional time of 20.58 on the men's side. After a quick break, Sickert and Hansen would then swim the men's and women's 100-yard freestyle. Hansen took second place in the women's race, swimming a NCAA provisional time of 51.95, while Sickert blew the competition away with a NCAA provisional time of 45.76.
 
In the next event, the women's 200-yard backstroke, Wahlstrom swam a first-place time of 2:06.33, followed by a second-place finish in the men's 200-backstroke from her teammate Aldabe, swimming a time of 1:51.56. The Sharks would then cruise to victory in the men's and women's 200-yard breaststroke as Lobanov and Westman each took first place. Westman swam a NCAA provisional time of 2:20.24 in the women's race, while Lobanov swam a time of 2:02.96.
 
Kleinbeck and Courtney DeVeny (Fr., Estero, Fla.) followed with first-place finishes in the men's and women's 500-yard freestyle, respectively. DeVeny swam a time of 5:08.05 followed by Kleinbeck who swam a time of 4:40.90. The Sharks would then dictate the times in the men's and women's 100-yard butterfly with wins from Sickert and Lawrenz. Lawrenz swam a time of 58.62 on the women's side, while Sickert swam a NCAA provisional time of 49.60 on the men's side. Following suit with the last six events, Aldabe and Westman would sweep the men's and women's 200-yard IM, respectively. Westman swam a time of 2:09.85 followed by Aldabe who swam a time of 1:53.60.
 
In the women's 200-yard freestyle relay, NSU's women's A-team, consisting of Lawrenz, Hansen, Shows and Wahlstrom, swam a first-place time of 1:37.04. The last event of the day, the men's 200-freestyle relay, NSU's A-team consisting of Michael Ragan (So., Dacula, Ga.), Lobanov, Lundgren and Kleinbeck swam a second-place time of 1:23.82.
 
The Sharks will be back in action this Thursday as they host Bridgeport in a dual meet. The meet is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
