Men’s Basketball Falls Close to Palm Beach Atlantic, 62-60

Sharks end three-game road trip.

Box Score WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University men's basketball team (6-9) fell in their third straight road contest to the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish (6-9), 62-60, Wednesday at the Rubin Arena.

Chris Page (Jr., Plainfield, Ind.) led all scorers with 23 points on 8-for-16 shooting. He had four rebounds and tied the team-best mark of three assists. Justin Jeangerard (Sr., Weaverville, Calif.) had a season-high 10 rebounds and drained two 3-pointers for six points, passing Andy Platt for fourth in school history at 169.

The first half was a see-saw battle, with the Sharks taking an early lead but ending at a 26-point time. NSU scored the first bucket on a dunk from Harrison Goodrick (So., Sydney Australia) and eventually jumped out to a 12-6 lead. From there, NSU went on a near-four minute scoreless streak, allowing the Sailfish to go on a 10-0 run. But NSU would heat up, recapture the lead and go up by multiple baskets again at 26-22. Looking to retake the momentum, PBA's Evin Graham would score back-to-back buckets to tie the game at the break.

NSU shot a rough 35.7 percent in the first half, along with a mark of 2-for-8 from the foul line. However, the poor shooting was negated by PBA's nine turnovers before halftime.

After scoring the first three points of the second half, NSU went on a severe dry spell. For a near nine minute stretch, the Sharks would only score six points, all from junior Mike Chalas (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) off the bench. Meanwhile, PBA would score 21 points to build a 12 point lead, its largest of the contest.

The Sharks kept shooting, despite the deficit, and would climb back into the contest. NSU cut the deficit down to three points at 55-52, but PBA scored timely buckets to maintain the lead. PBA earned a trip to the line for a free throw, earned a rebound on the opposite end while burning over a minute of clock time. With 1:09 left, Garet Tucker hit a long two to put his team ahead by six.

NSU continued to push, cutting the deficit down to three again with 15 seconds left. PBA missed back-to-back free throws to keep NSU's hopes alive, and Page hit his free throws on the opposite end with six seconds left. The Sailfish inbounded the ball and hit two free throws to put them back up three.

Having to go the full end of the floor in five seconds, Chalas crossed the half court line and was fouled with eight tenths of a second left. Chalas calmly nailed the first free throw before purposely missing the second. Nobody could secure the rebound, while the clock was errantly started too early. The referee ordered the clock to go back to 0.8, but the jump ball arrow gave possession to PBA. The Sailfish inbounded the ball to end the game and NSU's hopes of a comeback.

In the end, the Sharks shot 39.2 percent from the floor at 20-for-51. PBA went 21-for-48, good for 43.8 percent. The rebound battle was won by PBA, 35-29.

Chalas finished the game with his second highest mark of the year at 10 points on 3-for-4 shooting. Maurice Fuller (Sr., Westfield, Ind.) had nine points on 3-for-5 shooting, all from downtown.

NSU will look to rebound at home on Saturday, Jan. 24 against Florida Tech at 4 p.m.
