FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University swimming and diving teams opened 2015 splitting a dual meet with the visiting Grand Valley State University Lakers. NSU's women defeated GVSU by a score of 115-90, while the men fell by a score of 107-98.
In the first event of the afternoon, NSU's women's 200-yard medley relay A-team, consisting of
Courtney DeVeny (Fr., Estero, Fla.)
, Malin Westman (Harryda, Sweden),
Emma Lawrenz (Sr., Mennetonka, Minn.) and
Jordan Shows (Fr., Alta Loma, Calif.) swam to a first-place finish with a time of 1:48.68. The men's 200-medley relay A-team, consisting of
Marco Aldabe (So., Alicante, Spain),
Anton Lobanov (Fr., Novosibirisk, Russia),
Thiago Sickert (So., Vila Velha, Brazil) and
Magnus Lundgren (Sr., Stockholm, Sweden), swam to a first-place finish with a time of 1:32.16.
In the next event, the women's 1000-yard freestyle,
Brooke Munion (So., Bethlehem, Pa.) was the top finisher for the Sharks, swimming a time of 10:55.60.
Blake Woodrow (Fr., Fort Myers, Fla.) followed with a first-place finish in men's 1000-free with a time of 9:44.20. In the women's 200-yard freestyle, Emma Wahlstrom (So., Stockholm, Sweden) swam to a first-place finish with a time of 1:54.02.
Shane Kleinbeck (Sr., San Antonio, Texas) would then be the top finisher for the Sharks in the men's 200-free, swimming a time of 1:43.35.
Bryndis Hansen (So., Akureyri, Iceland) would then lead the way in the women's 50-yard freestyle, swimming a time of 24.27. Hansen was followed by Sickert, who swam a NCAA provisional time of 20.78 in the men's 50-free. DeVeny would then swim a time of 1:02.28 in the women's 100-yard individual medley, good enough for a second-place finish. She was followed by Lobanov, who swam to a second-place finish in the men's 100-individual medley with a time of 52.68.
DeVeny followed with a first-place finish in the women's 200-yard butterfly, swimming a time of 2:12.83.
Thomas Rutherford (Fr., North Port, Fla.) followed as the top finisher for the Sharks in the men's 200-butterfly, swimming a time of 1:56.44, good enough for a second-place finish. In the women's 100-yard freestyle, Hansen swam to a first-place finish with a time of 53.41. Sickert followed her with a NCAA provisional time of 45.51 in the men's 100-free, good enough for a first-place finish. Wahlstrom would then win the women's 200-yard backstroke, swimming a time of 2:06.06. Aldabe followed as the top finisher for NSU in the men's 200-backstroke, swimming a third-place finishing time of 1:57.84.
In the women's 500-yard freestyle, Munion swam a time of 5:20.22, good enough for a second-place finish. Kleinbeck followed as the top finisher for the Sharks in the men's 500-free, swimming a time of 4:45.09, good enough for a second-place finish. In the next event, the women's 200-yard breaststoke, Westman swam to a first-place finish with a time of 2:22.74. She was followed by Lobanov, who swam to a first-place finish with a time of 2:04.25, more than 10 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.
The final two events of the afternoon were the men's and women's 200-yard freestyle relays. NSU's women's A-team, consisting of Hansen, Lawrenz, Shows and Wahlstrom took the top spot with a time of 1:37.28. The men's A-team, consisting of
Michael Ragan (So., Dacula, Ga.), Kleinbeck,
Shawn Paretti (So., Slidell, La.) and Lundgren, was the top finisher for the Sharks, swimming a time of 1:25.27, good enough for a second-place finish.
The Sharks will be back in action on Saturday, January 10
th, when they take on Florida Southern College. The meet is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
