FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University women's soccer team won their fifth straight, edging out Palm Beach Atlantic Saturday night with a quick game-winner in overtime, 2-1.
Just 2:41 into additional time, on the Sharks' (8-2-0) third corner in a span of 1:38,
Samantha Gestido (Sr., Hialeah, Fla.) booted it into the box, where it eventually found
Sierra Lelii (R-Sr., Seminole, Fla.). She headed it in on a bounce for the golden goal, her 13th of the year, sending the boisterous crowd home happy.
Palm Beach Atlantic (4-5-0) forced the extra frame by scoring with 43 seconds left, after what looked to be the only goal of the match holding up for over 75 minutes of gameplay. Finding a small sliver of space was Kasey Wyer of the Sailfish to equalize in the 90th minute.
That score spoiled what would have been the game-winner from
Elizabeth Haumschild (Sr., Riverview, Fla.), who absolutely annihilated a shot into the net at 22:30. She was fed by
Emily Stearns (Fr., Orlando, Fla.), and went airborne with a powerful right-footed strike into the left side of the goal for the 1-0 lead.
The shot advantage ended in the Sharks' favor, 19-15 (including a 3-0 tally in OT), and they had seven shots on goal compared to just three by the Sailfish.
Julia Nytorp (Örnsköldsvik, Sweden) had four shots to pace NSU, with three each coming from Lelii, Haumschild and
Cydney Niedermeyer (Jr., Fort Myers, Fla.). Wyer had six of PBA's 15.
The Sharks will face their final non-SSC opponent of the season this upcoming Tuesday afternoon, traveling to Babson Park, Florida, to take on Webber International. Game time is 3 p.m.
