FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 10 Nova Southeastern University tennis team puts its unblemished start to the 2015 spring season on the line in a tough road contest Sunday, facing SSC rival and the No. 3-ranked Saint Leo Lions at 11 a.m.
The Sharks (5-0, 2-0 SSC) took each of their first two conference matches last weekend, nearly completing both in shutout fashion. With both also coming on the road, they topped Florida Tech 8-1 and kept No. 37 Tampa off the scoreboard, 9-0. They are the only remaining team in the conference without a loss on this early season.
Individually, five singles Sharks are undefeated as well, combining for an overall mark of 29-1. Junior
Petra Jurova (Bratislava, Slovakia) has continued to shine in her first run with the team, winning both possible Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week awards. She and No. 1 doubles partner
Sabrina Kierberg (Jr., Munich, Germany) also have a 5-0 mark, with the three NSU combinations going 12-3 to start the year.
Saint Leo (5-1, 2-0 SSC) and the Sharks are two of only three squads in the league that has not yet suffered an in-conference defeat, along with No. 2 Barry, all at 2-0. The Lions lost 9-0 to Armstrong State (the nation's new No. 1, having beaten both them and Barry), but have since won four in a row, over SSC schools Florida Southern and Lynn as well as Palm Beach Atlantic and Embry-Riddle.
The Lions feature the No. 14 singles player in the South Region according to the ITA Preseason rankings in Anastasia Wagner, and their No. 1-slotted player, Isabella Robbiani, is 5-1 to start the season. They have played three different doubles combinations in the first draw, with Robbiani and Maria Benikrane having the most success at 3-1.
First serve from St. Leo will be at 11 a.m. Sunday.
