ST. LEO, Fla. – The No. 10 Nova Southeastern University tennis team brought home a huge win over the nation's No. 3 team, Saint Leo, winning their third straight road conference matchup to improve to 6-0 on the year and 3-0 in Sunshine State play after a 5-4 victory on Sunday afternoon.
"It's a great day to be a Shark!" said NSU head coach Stephen Schram. "The girls fought so hard and it was a great win for the program."
The Sharks got off to a strong start by taking two of the three doubles matches over the homestanding Lions (5-2, 2-1 SSC). The No. 2 combination of
Irina Constantinide (Jr., Galati, Romania) and
Petra Jurova (Jr., Bratislavia, Slovakia) took the first point of the day by topping their opposition 8-2. Then, in extra time,
Alexandra Johansson (Sr., Sydney, Australia) and
Alex Kaeser (So., Woodstock, Ga.), in the No. 3 slot, moved to 6-0 on the year by winning their match 9-7.
Switching to one-on-one, No. 1
Sabrina Kierberg (Jr., Munich, Germany) got the first NSU singles victory and third point of the afternoon, in two sets over Isabella Robbiani, 6-3, 6-0. Just a bit later, picking up another straight-set win was No. 4 Constantinide, 6-3, 6-4, against Paula Montoya, pushing the Shark junior to 6-0 in singles thus far this season.
Leading 4-2 and needing just one point in their last three matches to clinch the match, NSU was able to do just that, with Jurova picking up a three-set win. She overcame Anastasia Wagner 0-6, 6-4, 6-3 to gain her sixth victory in as many singles matches and take the team win for the Sharks.
NSU looks to continue their roll this upcoming week with three matches in three days on neutral courts, in the Spring Break Sports Tournament in Orlando. The first opponent for the Sharks will be Saginaw Valley State on Tuesday morning, beginning at 11:30 a.m.
