FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – After winning the Sunshine State Conference title for the first time in program history, Nova Southeastern University sent 10 baseball players to play summer baseball in leagues around the country this summer. Below is a recap of each player's summer.
Michael Hernandez – Harwich Mariners, Cape Cod LeagueHernandez received great experience in the famed Cape Cod League, as the only non-Division I player on the team. In 16 games for the Mariners, Hernandez crushed two home runs and drove in six runs, hitting .256 with a .395 slugging percentage over his final 14 games.
Julian Loret de Mola – Thunder Bay Border Cats, Northwoods LeagueLoret de Mola made seven starts and six relief appearances to help the Border Cats finish fifth overall in the Northwoods League's North Division. His best game came on June 27th, when he threw a complete game shutout in a 3-0 victory over Waterloo to earn the league's Pitcher of the Night award, allowing just five hits and two walks, while striking out five batters. Loret de Mola finished 4-4 with 28 strikeouts in 49 innings.
Devin Raftery – Altamonte Springs Boom, Florida LeagueAfter leading the Florida League in wins and strikeouts last summer, Raftery returned for the new Altamonte Springs team, and has been even more electric to help the Boom secure the second seed in the playoffs with the best pitching staff in the league. He was named the league's Pitcher of the Week in the third week of the season, after tossing 6.1 innings of scoreless, one-hit ball, with just one walk and three strikeouts, and the team's Pitcher of the Week nominee again last week for six shutout innings, scattering four hits with seven strikeouts. Raftery was named to the league's South Team in the All-Star Game, at which point he had a 1.74 ERA and 0.92 WHIP with 17 strikeouts in 20.2 innings, and earned the victory for the South with a scoreless inning of work. He currently ranks second in the league in strikeouts (42), third in ERA (1.48), and third in opponent batting average (.179). The Boom will begin a best-of-three series with #3 Leesburg tonight to play in the Championship Game on Sunday at Tropicana Field.
Matt Hardy – Altamonte Springs Boom, Florida LeagueHardy has made six starts and six relief appearances as part of that same dominant Boom staff, recording a 2.93 ERA, .235 opponent average and 31 strikeouts in 40 innings. His first of three wins this season was arguably his best appearance yet, allowing just one hit and one walk in four shutout innings on June 10th against Winter Park, while striking out six batters. Two weeks later, facing that same Winter Park team on June 26th, Hardy once again held them scoreless, this time for five innings, allowing three hits and one walk, with three strikeouts.
Tommy Barberi – Altamonte Springs Boom, Florida LeagueBarberi has been a reliable arm out of the bullpen for the Boom, with a 2.79 ERA in 12 relief appearances, holding the opponent scoreless in nine of them. He has 18 strikeouts to 5 walks and 1-0 record in 19.1 innings pitched in those 12 games.
Brandon Sedell – Altamonte Springs Boom, Florida LeagueSplitting time in his 27 games between catcher and third base, Sedell ranks fourth on the Boom in runs batted in (11) and hit by pitches (5) fifth in doubles (three), and is one of just six hitters with a home run this season. He showed very good plate discipline, drawing 14 walks, compared to 15 strikeouts, for a .383 on-base percentage. On the Boom's last day of the regular season, a double-header with Leesburg, Sedell started one at third and one behind the dish, batting second in both. On the day, he was a combined 3-for-6 with two runs scored, two walks, and his second stolen base of the summer.
Dylan Woods – DeLand Suns, Florida LeagueDespite only playing in 25 of DeLand's 40 games (62.5%), Woods was a top-three hitter across the board. He ranked third on the team in runs scored (16), walks (18), stolen bases (3) and walk-to-strikeout rate (1.20), as well as second in on-base percentage (.383) among players who have played in at least half the team games. Woods was also very reliable defensively, making just two errors on the 121 balls hit to him, and his .983 fielding percentage was second on the team with the same 50% of games minimum. DeLand lost a very close play-in game 2-1 last night for a chance to play in the championship game. Woods was 1-3 with a walk out of the leadoff spot, starting at second base.
Cameron Churchill – Glens Falls Dragons, Perfect Game LeagueDespite an inconsistent role – three starts and nine games in relief – Churchill led the Dragons in wins with three and finished second among all starters in ERA (2.97). Churchill had a 16.2-inning scoreless streak from June 24th-July 12th, spanning four games out of the 'pen. During the streak, he allowed just six hits and struck out 11 of the 60 batters he faced. He finished the season with 22 strikeouts in 39.1 innings pitched.
Ryan Dodge – Glens Falls Dragons, Perfect Game LeagueDodge received 28 at bats in 12 games. He recorded eight singles, driving in two, scoring four and walking four times, as well. On June 13th, he was 2-for-3 with a run scored. The next day, Dodge went 1-for-2, with two runs batted in. two walks, and a sacrifice fly.
Gil Torres – Glens Falls Dragons, Perfect Game LeagueTorres pitched ten times out of the bullpen, holding the opposing team scoreless in eight of those games, including each of his first five. He started the summer with 4.2 scoreless innings, allowing three hits for a .188 opposing average and striking out four.
