FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University men's soccer team (2-1-0) earned a win in its first home match of the year over the St. Thomas Bobcats (2-2-0), 1-0, Sunday.
The lone goal came from
Nate Bladecki (Fr., Troy, Mich.) in his debut at the NSU Soccer Complex. In the 14
th minute, Bladecki was set up on a great play from sophomore
Jacob Robbie (Plantation, Fla.). Robbie won a ball just inside St. Thomas territory and dodged his defender, creating open space to work. Robbie placed a pinpoint pass to Bladecki, who punched it into the far post from 10 yards out on the right side. It was his first collegiate goal, after a previous score was washed out do to a game cancellation midway through.
NSU's goal was during an even portion of the match where both sides were hitting their target.
Taylor Bailey (Fr., Greeneville, Tenn.) was forced to make a diving save in the third minute and NSU had a clearance off the line in the seventh. The Bobcats recorded four shots on goal within the first 18 minutes.
Weather would play a huge factor in the match, including over 90 degree heat and light rain. Midway through the first half, both teams left the field due to a 30-minute lightning delay. When the game resumed, NSU's offense assumed control. The Sharks held possession for long stretches and Bailey would only need to make three saves over the final 70 minutes.
Although NSU led in the second half, they pressed aggressively for a second goal, taking 14 shots in the period to double their output in the first. NSU had multiple opportunities in the period, including one-on-one chances for
Santiago Camacho (So., Bogota, Colombia) and
Faycal Oulahbib (Jr., Paris, France). However, Bobcat goalkeeper Deljan Bregasi made eight saves in the half, some of which came from point-blank range.
The lack of a second half goal created drama down the stretch. St. Thomas looked to equalize over the final 10 minutes and had a great chance to tie the match with just 22 seconds left on the board. NSU committed a hard foul 25 yards out from the goal, setting up a free kick for which the ref stopped the clock. The Bobcats tried to send the ball into the box, but the line blocked the ball and the Sharks were able to allow the clock to wind down.
Overall, NSU took 21 shots and forced 11 St. Thomas saves. Despite coming off the bench and playing limited minutes, Ouhlabib and
Filippo Mancini (So., Genova, Italy) combined for 12 of NSU's strikes, with four on target. Bailey earned his first home win in goal and made six saves.
The Sharks will stay at home for their next match, beginning Sunshine State Conference play against Florida Southern Wednesday at 7 p.m.
