DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University women's soccer team won their third match in a row, posting their third consecutive shutout, in a road victory Wednesday night over Embry-Riddle, 2-0.
The first score of the night came in the 21st minute. After a screamer off the foot of
Sierra Lelii (R-Sr., Seminole, Fla.) hit the right post, the ball ricocheted near the goal line on the left side and was nudged in by
Emily Stearns (Fr., Orlando, Fla.) for her first collegiate goal. Lelii was credited with the assist.
The Sharks (6-2) only allowed three shots in the first half, holding on to that slim margin. Embry-Riddle (4-3) became more aggressive after the break, equaling the Sharks on shots attempted in the second half, 7-7. A golden opportunity for the Eagles came in the 54th minute after a handball in the box, but the ensuing penalty kick by Katherine Ebbs hit the right post and bounded away.
It remained 1-0 until almost the very end. ERAU had a corner kick with just over 30 seconds left, bringing their goalkeeper, Olivia Lynch up to try to equalize. When it was cleared out, Stearns fired from over three-quarters of the field away and found the empty net, with Lynch unable to chase it down.
In goal,
Amanda Kopale (R-Jr., Cape Coral, Fla.) earned her second full-time clean sheet in three games for the Sharks and had five saves. The team will next be back in action a week from tonight. Next Wednesday, Sept. 30, they will host Lynn at the NSU Soccer Complex, starting at 7 p.m.
