Hat Trick For Lelii Leads to Fourth Straight 'W' for Women's Soccer

Sharks top Lynn 4-2; PBA is next on the docket Saturday

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University women's soccer team ran their win streak to four, defeating Sunshine State Conference rival Lynn 4-2 behind a hat trick from the league's top scorer, Sierra Lelii.

Lynn (2-6-1, 1-2-0 SSC) started aggressive, taking the first five and seven of the first eight shots, but couldn't dent the scoreboard. Once the Sharks (7-2-0, 2-1-0 SSC) took it to their side of the pitch, they got goals in rapid-fire succession, each from Lelii (R-Sr., Seminole, Fla.).

First, Emily Stearns (Fr., Orlando, Fla.) outbattled a defender, found some breathing room and got it to Lelii, who faked right and fired left, past a diving Alexa Downie at 23:07. Less than three minutes later, Julia Nytorp (Sr., Örnsköldsvik, Sweden) came up with another 50/50 ball, and got it to Lelii. With Downie too far out of the box, she chipped it up and over her from about 30 yards out for goal No. 11 of the season at 20:42.

Another soft header made for the Sharks' third goal with under five minutes left to go in the first half. A battle again on the Sharks' half went their way, gathered by Carley Montgomery (So., Sanford, Fla.) before eventually finding its way to freshman Kelley Johnson (Isaaquah, Wash.). Johnson beat one defender and again went up and over Downie for her first collegiate goal.

The Sharks were extremely efficient before the break, with four of their six attempts on goal, making three. Lynn had nine shots, just three on target at that point.

In the second, Lynn came out on the offensive again, taking the first seven shots, the fifth of which got them on the board: a successful penalty kick by Emily Weisberg with exactly 27 minutes remaining.

NSU didn't get their first attempt until 20:29 to go, when Lelii had some space but was wide. She made good on it just 46 seconds later, winning a one-on-one with Lynn's second keeper, Jensen Wiedmer. Her third goal of the night makes for a dozen on the year, and it came on the second assist of the night from Nytorp.

Lynn added one more late, in the 85th minute, when a fresh sub, Danielle Paschall, sent in a rocket from more than 30 yards out, sneaking into the left side of the net. It would be the last shot of the game, ending a 19-9 Fighting Knight advantage, yet a two-goal Shark win.

Amanda Kopale (R-Jr., Cape Coral, Fla.) picked up the win in the goal, coming out as the second score from Lynn was tallied. She is now 3-1 on the season. Lelii had six of the team's nine shots, five on goal, with one each from Johnson, Sarah Keville, and Nytorp. Downie fell to 2-3, and the Fighting Knights were paced by Donish Cole's six shots.

The Sharks are back at home on Saturday hosting Palm Beach Atlantic at 7 p.m.
