No. 10 Women's Basketball Loses First Conference Matchup

Sharks fall to Tampa to go to 7-1 at midway mark

TAMPA, Fla. – The No. 10 Nova Southeastern University women's basketball team saw its 10-game winning streak come to an end Wednesday night at the hands of Tampa, 71-45.

The Sharks (15-2, 7-1 SSC) and Spartans (10-8, 4-4 SSC) played a back-and-forth first quarter, one that saw Ida Krogh (R-Sr., Aarhus, Denmark) beat the buzzer by corralling a rebound and hitting a quick-trigger, long 3-pointer to pull her Sharks to within three, 19-16.

However, Tampa used an 18-6 advantage in the second quarter to pull ahead and never really looked back, shooting an even 50 percent overall to hand the Sharks their first loss to an SSC foe in just under 12 months.

Krogh would be NSU's leading scorer on Wednesday with nine. Kayla Wright (Jr., Lauderhill, Fla.) scored eight, with Taylor Buie (R-Jr., Puyallup, Wash.) and Monaye Merritt (R-Sr., Philadelphia, Pa.) adding seven each. Merritt was also the team leader in rebounds with five and assists with four.

Juliana Cavallaro paced UT with 18 points, and Angela Alvarez notched a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. It was the fourth straight SSC win for the Spartans to even up their conference mark.

The Sharks remain a game ahead in the SSC standings as both Florida Southern and Florida Tech posted wins Wednesday to each go to 6-2. Past them is a four-way tie, all at 4-4, between the Spartans, Barry, Eckerd and Rollins.

Next for the Sharks, to start their second go-round through the conference, is a home matchup against 1-7 Saint Leo (4-13 overall). The Lions and Sharks tip off from the NSU Arena at 2 p.m. this Saturday afternoon.
