Sharks Drop Saturday Tilt With Newberry

Kevin Suarez goes 3-for-4 in the loss.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern University's baseball team (0-2) dropped game two of its 2016 season to the Newberry Wolves (2-0) on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at the NSU Baseball Complex by a score of 8-4. Alexander Kline (0-1) took to loss, while Newberry's Robert Westenrieder (1-0) earned the win.

Newberry took an early 3-0 lead, scoring three runs (two earned) in the top of the first inning of off NSU's Jonny Ortiz. The Sharks came right back, scoring one run in each of the bottom of the first and second innings. Brandon Gomez and Kevin Suarez collected a RBI each to bring the score to 3-2. Ortiz would allow another unearned run in the top of the third inning, as Newberry took a 4-2 lead.

The Sharks began to chip away at the Wolves' lead, scoring a run in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a Suarez double to right-center field, scoring Michael Hernandez. NSU tied in the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, beginning with an Andres Visbal single and then an Austin Pereira bunt. Visbal advanced to third on a Suarez single and Dylan Woods would ground out, scoring Visbal.

It was all Newberry from there, as the Wolves scored four runs off of the Sharks' bullpen, leading to an 8-4 win for the visitors from South Carolina.

The Sharks will regroup and welcome Catawba to the NSU Baseball Complex on Sunday. Staff ace, Alex Mateo, will get the ball with Devin Pellien and Devin Raftery still fresh in the bullpen. First pitch is at 1:00 p.m.
