FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – With one ranked victory already under its belt following Sunday's 81-78 upset over then-No. 20 Southern Connecticut State, Nova Southeastern will attempt to take its momentum on the road in a tough environment and pick up another Top-25 win when it meets No. 9 Barry Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
Prior to Sunday's thrilling triumph over the Owls, Nova Southeastern's most recent victory against a ranked opponent came back on February 13, 2016 versus none other than Barry. Former Shark
Chris Page, along with
Harrison Goodrick, combined for 71 points in last year's effort as Nova Southeastern posted a season-high 105 points following an impressive 66.7 percent shooting performance. Goodrick fell just one assist shy of a triple-double with 30 points and 13 boards, and is off to another solid start this season with averages of 13.3 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.
The difference, though, in Wednesday's matchup will likely come down to the production of
Dwayne Gibson and
Gerard Tarin. Gibson enters the league contest fresh off a career-high 23 points, earning Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week in the process. The sophomore connected on 5-of-7 attempts from beyond the arc, allowing the Sharks to keep the defense honest with a strong inside-out threat. Both of Nova Southeastern's wins thus far in 2016-17 have come in games in which Gibson has scored in double-figures. Tarin, meanwhile, bounced back from a tough performance at Tampa by registering his second double-double this season with 10 points and 17 rebounds. His defensive presence will be needed as the Sharks look to slow Buccaneers' leading scorer Adrian Gonzalez.
In five starts this season, Gonzalez has averaged 21.0 points per game on a league-high 70.8 percent from the field. The Barry senior has already reached the 30-point plateau twice including a career-high 35 points in the Bucs latest victory over Florida National that secured his spot as the eighth player in school history to record 1,000 career points.
In addition to Gonzalez, point guard Elvar Fridriksson has picked up right where he left off a year ago for the SSC's highest-scoring offense (95.6 ppg). After finishing first in the SSC in assists in 2015-16, Fridriksson has upped his passing numbers in the early going by dishing out 9.4 assists per game, enough for second in NCAA Division II.
Fans who bring canned goods and supplies to Wednesday night's game for the victims of the hurricane in Haiti will receive a raffle ticket for Universal Orlando tickets. The winner of the raffle will be announced during the contest.
