FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University women's basketball team (7-2, 4-1 SSC) defeated the Lynn Fighting Knights (4-4, 1-3 SSC) on Saturday at the NSU Arena, by a score of 75-71, with 30 points poured in by
Megan Piggott. The win marks the 11
th straight in the series history, dating back to the 2011-2012 season.
The Knights started quickly, holding a 7-1 lead less than three minutes into the game, but it would not last long. The Sharks broke out for a 16-2 run over the next four minutes, including 12 in a row, and maintained their lead through the rest of the game, ending the first quarter with a 21-15 margin.
Lynn made it a two-point game halfway through the second quarter, but that was the closest they would get. A
Samantha Logan three-pointer with five seconds left in the half pushed the lead back out to six at the break, 39-33. As a team, the Sharks made five of their seven three-point attempts in the first half.
The Sharks increased their control coming out of halftime, jumping out to a 13-point lead, their largest at that point, with an 11-4 sparked by Piggott's third three-pointer of the game. Her fourth ended the quarter by the same margin, with the Sharks ahead, 66-53.
Piggott's fifth and final three of the day started the scoring in the final frame to give the Sharks a game-high 16-point advantage. The Knights, however, true to their name, fought back, ending the game on an 18-6 run, but it wasn't enough as the Sharks ended up on top, 75-71.
Piggott, making just the second start of her career, finished with 30 points on 11 field goals and five three-pointers, all of which are individual season highs for the team in addition to personal career bests. Logan also laid in a career high with 18 points, while shooting 6-of-10 from the field, while
Maria Bardeeva dropped a career-high 14 off the bench, also with six made field goals, as well as four rebounds.
Amanda Tivenius led the team with 10 rebounds, the first double-digit output of her career.
Octavia Wilson and
Kariss Keller each made their first starts for NSU, as Wilson had a share of the team-high of five assists, and Keller did the same with two steals.
The Sharks will take their show across the country, first partaking in the Seattle-Pacific Classic in Seattle, Wash., where they will face off against the Cavaliers of Concordia-Portland and the host Seattle-Pacific Falcons on Friday and Saturday. Both matches will start at 5:00 p.m. PST. They will then head north of the border, to Vancouver, B.C., Canada, to take on the Simon Fraser Clan, the only Canadian NCAA-affiliated school, the following Monday at 2:00 p.m. PST.
