Strong Start Enough for NSU to Grab 60-51 Win Over Concordia Portland

Two Sharks tally double-digit points.

SEATTLE, Wash. – In its first game of the Seattle-Pacific Classic, the Nova Southeastern women's basketball team earned a 60-51 victory in a neutral-site game against Concordia-Portland University.

The first quarter was all Sharks (8-2) as the home team on the scoreboard shot a solid 52.9 percent from the field. Down by one (3-2) at the 9:05 mark, Nova Southeastern exploded for a 19-5 run sparked by a three-point shot by Samantha Logan. With a minute left in the quarter, a jumper by Christen Prasse gave NSU its largest lead of the game, 21-6, and ended the quarter's scoring for the Sharks as they went into the second quarter with an overwhelming 21-8 lead.

Turnovers plagued the Sharks in the second quarter, as the Cavaliers (3-6) closed the 13-point deficit by outscoring NSU 20-11. With NSU ahead by 12 at the 8:23 mark, CPU took off on a 14-3 run to come within one, 27-26, with 2:33 left. The Sharks were able to halt the Cavs' run with a pair of made free-throws by Megan Piggott, and added a few extra points to grab a 32-28 advantage heading into the break.

The third quarter saw low scoring for both teams, with no team shooting over 35 percent from the field. A trey by Octavia Wilson at the 6:27 mark pushed the Sharks ahead by nine, 40-31, and was the last bucket to be made before a 3:20 pause in scoring by either team. Both teams managed to sink a couple more baskets before the time expired, but it was NSU who remained on top, 43-40, heading into the final frame.

Concordia-Portland took their lone lead of the game early in the fourth, as their leading scorer, Danielle Hartzog, drained a three for a 45-43 edge over the Sharks. Another jumper by Hartzog gave CPU their largest lead, 47-43, before Wilson put up five straight points to give NSU back the lead, 50-47, which they would not relinquish as the Sharks would go on to win, 60-51.

Wilson led all players with 19 points and added five rebounds and two steals. Piggott joined Wilson in double-digit scoring, tallying 18 points to go along with a game-high five assists. Both Logan and Amanda Tivenius pulled down 10 boards, and Logan added six points and four assists.

Hartzog led the way with her third consecutive game in double figures for the Cavaliers, scoring 18 points, while also adding a season-high seven steals.

The Sharks are back in action tomorrow for their final game of the Seattle-Pacific Classic, when they will take on the No. 14 host at 5:00 p.m. PST. For live video and stats, head to NSUSharks.com.
