FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Following a near-upset of No. 9 Barry earlier in the week, Nova Southeastern will hit the road yet again, looking to draw back even in the Sunshine State Conference when it faces Florida Tech this Saturday at 4 p.m. ET.
Despite limiting the Buccaneers to 23.3 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes Wednesday, and receiving a season-high 28 points from
Harrison Goodrick, the Sharks surrendered an 11-0 run down the stretch before eventually falling to 1-2 in league play.
Facing Florida Tech, though, may be just what Nova Southeastern needs to quickly get back on track. The Sharks have experienced plenty of success, especially recently, against the Panthers having beaten head coach Billy Mims' club in each of the previous three meetings including a season sweep in 2015-16. While the team has collectively reeled off three straight victories against its SSC counterpart, junior
Troy Spears in particular ought to be excited to be back in the Clemente Center come Saturday considering his special performance last season.
Spears enters Saturday afternoon's matchup averaging a respectable 8.6 points per game thus far. That may change for the better, however, if the Martinsville, Indiana native is able to come close to repeating last season's effort at Florida Tech. With leading scorer
Chris Page sidelined due to injury, Spears filled the void by lighting up the Panthers last January for a career-high 23 points on 7-of-8 shooting from behind the arc. The guard connected on his first six attempts from long range in the first half as the Sharks drained 17 treys as a whole in the contest to earn the 88-83 win.
The three-point total marked a season-high a year ago, something the Sharks missed vitally in its latest loss after firing just 3-of-16 against Barry.
Florida Tech, meanwhile, converted 12 triples en route to a 90-75 triumph versus Rollins at home on Wednesday. Now 2-1 in the SSC, the Panthers have fired away at will from the three-point line this season, attempting a conference-high 29 treys per game.
The Florida Tech lineup relies heavily on the trio of Patrick Anderson, Sam Daniel and Jordan Majors. Together, the bunch has supplied 64 percent of the Panthers' scoring, while logging an average of 34.9 minutes per night.
