Gomez Homers Twice In Loss To Flagler

Gomez homers in fourth straight game.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University baseball team (6-6) offense was cooled off on a chilly night in St. Augustine, as the Sharks dropped game one of their three-game series against the Flagler College Saints (5-5) on Friday night by a score of 6-4. Brandon Gomez homered twice, marking the fourth straight game that the junior has left the yard. Alex Mateo took the loss, dropping his record to 1-2.

Gomez got things started for the Sharks, smashing his first home run of the night over the left-centerfield fence in the top of the first inning to give NSU a 1-0 lead. After registering three scoreless innings, Mateo would allow his first run of the game in the fourth, as the Saints tied the game at 1-1.

NSU quickly took back the lead in the top of the fifth, thanks to a Michael Hernandez triple and an Antonio Rodriguez single that drove Hernandez in. The Saints answered immediately, scoring one run to tie the game at 2-2. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Mateo walked and hit the first two batters he faced, ending his night. Cameron Churchill came on in relief and limited the Saints damage to one run in the sixth inning, as Flagler took a 3-2 lead.

Flagler broke the game open in the eighth inning, scoring three runs on three hits to take a 6-2 lead. While the game may have been out of reach, Gomez had other plans. The Miami, Fla. native sent his second round-tripper of the night over the left field fence to bring the Sharks within two. Brendan Cutting then singled to bring the tying run to the plate in Michael Hernandez. Unfortunately, Hernandez struck out, followed by a Rodriguez strikeout, ending NSU's comeback effort.

The Sharks will be back in action Saturday afternoon beginning at noon. Tune in to each game following the links on the schedule page.
