Softball Drops Contests Against St. Thomas Aquinas, Wayne State

The Sharks lost a close 1-0 game against St. Thomas Aquinas College and then fell 6-2 to Wayne State

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University softball team (6-17, 1-8 SSC) dropped games 1-0 to St. Thomas Aquinas College (1-3) and 6-2 to Wayne State University (11-2) in their second day of the NTC Spring Games on Saturday afternoon.

The first game against St. Thomas Aquinas was a pitcher's duel as Megan Granitto (Fr., Wellington, Fla.) held the Spartans to five hits, one earned run and had three strikeouts (2-4). In her first appearance of the season, Spartans pitcher Briana Keavany (1-0) picked up the win giving up six hits, three walks and earning four strikeouts.

Erica Winter (Fr., Blaine. Minn) was in the circle for the second game against Wayne State. Winter (2-7) gave up 12 hits, three earned runs and had two strikeouts. Mackenzie Boehler (3-1) got the victory for the Warriors giving up nine Shark hits, two earned runs and getting nine strikeouts.

Game 1
The Sharks put up three hits and left six runners on base through the top of the fifth. The hits came from Dakota Villella (Jr., Hollywood, Fla.) in the first, a single from Ashley Roe (Jr., Flower Mound, Texas) in the third and a single to right center by Katey Blummer (Jr., Naples, Fla.) in the fourth.

The Sharks threatened in the top of the fourth as Blummer's single started things off. Dajia Jones (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.) drew a walk and Sophia Devesa (Fr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) reached safely on a fielding error by the Spartans shortstop to load the bases. The bases were left loaded as an infield fly and strikeout would end the half inning.

St. Thomas Aquinas put up their run in the bottom of the fifth off a bunt single by Nikolette Nevola, which scored Cyan Scarduzio despite a great defensive play by Granitto to Blummer at the plate. Roe, who went 2-for-3, would get the team's final hit in the seventh but no runs would score for the Sharks.

Game 2
The matchup with the Warriors was an offensive battle with NSU striking first with a run in the bottom of the first. Villella began the inning with a double to left center and would advance to third on a passed ball. She would be drive home by a Blummer single to left field.

Wayne State answered with four runs on four hits and a NSU error in the top of the third. Down 4-1, Roe began the bottom of the third with a triple to right center. She was brought in by another single from Blummer who went 2-for-4 with two RBI in the game.

The Warriors tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth with two outs and three consecutive singles. The Sharks would leave two runners on in the fifth and the sixth. Granitto would see her first hit of the game in the bottom of the fifth prior to Roe's second single. Jones began the bottom half of the sixth with a single to left followed by a single by Devesa. Villella would put up another hit in the bottom of the seventh to go 2-for-4 with one run scored but would be left on base to end the game.

NSU will conclude the Spring Games with matchups against Bentley University and St. Thomas Aquinas on Sunday, March 12 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively. Links to live stats, live audio and live video can be found HERE.
