Sharks Baseball Remains Red Hot Defeating Southern Connecticut

Jonny Ortiz earns his third win of the year.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University baseball team (15-11, 5-4 SSC) defeated the Southern Connecticut State University Owls (5-9-1) on Monday night by a score of 4-2. Jonny Ortiz picked up his third win, tossing seven innings, while allowing just one earned run.

In a fast paced Monday night affair, the Sharks did what they needed to do to earn the win after a long weekend on the west coast of Florida. The Sharks had four players with multiple hits, including Dallas Perez, Sebastian Diaz, Andres Visbal and Kavan Thompson.

After allowing an unearned run in the top of the second inning, the Sharks' offense had to make up for its mishap in the field, doing so in the bottom of the third inning. With the score at 1-0, Perez led the inning off with a bunt single that went no further than a foot in front of the plate. Diaz then laced a single to right, moving Perez over the third base. Diaz would immediately steal second base, taking away the double play and putting two runners in scoring position for the always-dangerous Daniel Zardon. Zardon a 3-2 pitch to centerfield, deep enough to score Perez from third, tying the game at 1-1. After Brandon Gomez flew out, Andres Visbal stepped to the plate and kept a ball just fair down the third base line for a double, scoring Diaz. Kevin Suarez then pushed the NSU lead to 3-1 with a RBI-single to centerfield, scoring Visbal from second.

Southern Connecticut was not ready to go away just yet, as the Owls scored one run in the fifth inning to shrink the NSU lead to 3-2. NSU earned that run right back in the sixth inning, as Anchia stole home on a throw down to second from the SCSU catcher, making the score 4-2.

That was where the score would remain for the rest of the ballgame, as Devin Pellien would toss the final two innings in relief of Ortiz and shut down the Owls' hopes of a comeback effort on his way to earning his first save.

The Sharks will be back in action Thursday night and Friday afternoon, welcoming the Saint Leo Lions to town for an SSC showdown. First pitch on Thursday night is at 6:00 p.m. followed by a 1:00 p.m. start to Saturday's doubleheader.
