Cintron, Gomez, and Thompson’s Home Runs Not Enough Against PBA

NSU’s pitching falters in loss to Sailfish.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University baseball team (28-13, 14-4 SSC) dropped their final midweek contest of the year to the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish (19-24) on Tuesday night by a score of 8-5. Jancarlos Cintron, Brandon Gomez and Kavan Thompson each homered in the game, but it was not enough for the Sharks to earn a win against the Sailfish.

The Sharks got an uncharacteristic start from go-to midweek starter Jonny Ortiz, as the junior southpaw walked four batters in two innings of work and allowed five earned runs. Cameron Churchill lasted all of 0.2 innings in relief of Ortiz after allowing a leadoff home run in the top of third inning and proceeding to hit three Sailfish batters before head coach Greg Brown called on Kyle Kilbourne to record the final out of the third inning.

Kilbourne proved to be a bright spot for the Sharks, tossing 3.1 innings of scoreless baseball. Steven Fleming recorded a scoreless inning of his own in the top of the seventh inning, leaving runners on second and third, as he struck out the final hitter of the inning.

While the pitching had a rare off night, the offense pounded out three home runs, including a solo home runs from Cintron and Thompson and a two-run shot from Gomez. Eight of nine hitters in the NSU lineup collected a hit on Tuesday night, highlighted by Dylan Woods' three for four night at the plate.

The Sharks will be back in action this coming weekend, taking on Embry-Riddle in a three-game series. The series will be the final time the Sharks will play at home this season. Nine seniors will be honored on Saturday prior to the doubleheader and all Shark fans are encouraged to come out and support.
