No. 13 Baseball Completes Fifth Weekend Sweep In A Row

Julian Loret de Mola throws a complete game in the series finale.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 13 Nova Southeastern University baseball team (31-13, 14-4 SSC) completed the sweep of the Embry-Riddle Eagles (28-19) on Saturday afternoon, winning both games of the doubleheader by scores of 10-8 and 6-0. The sweep was highlighted by the celebration of nine seniors playing the final home games of their careers and a complete game shutout in the series finale from senior Julian Loret de Mola.

Game 1 – NSU 10, ERAU 8

The Sharks found themselves in a 3-0 hole after the Eagles scored three runs off of Matt Hardy to begin the game. NSU responded with one run in the bottom of the first when Brandon Gomez hit a line drive off of the centerfield fence to score Daniel Zardon. After Embry-Riddle scored two more runs in the third and fifth, the Sharks matched it with two runs of their own in the fifth after Antonio Rodriguez sent a sac fly to right field, scoring Kavan Thompson and Zardon singled to drive in Woods.

Embry-Riddle would post two more runs in the sixth to take a 7-3 lead, and that's when the game would be taken over by the NSU offense, as the Sharks tallied six runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 9-7 lead. Andres Visbal collected two RBI in the inning, including a solo home run. Thompson added an RBI and Rodriguez would single for two RBI of his own. Gomez also drove in a run, singling to right field.

The Eagles and Sharks would trade runs in the eighth, both scoring one run and that would be all as the Sharks took game two of the series and were headed full-steam toward a sweep. Devin Raftery earned his ninth save of the year, tossing two innings in relief and extending his strikeout streak to 38 straight appearances.

Game 2 – NSU 6, ERAU 0

Game two was all about Julian Loret de Mola and his absolutely dominant performance on the mound. Loret de Mola tied his career high in strikeouts with nine, while allowing just five hits and two walks. His complete game shutout performance is the first since Vinnie Contaldi did so against Bentley back in 2013.

LDM's run support came in two innings, beginning in the first inning when the Sharks scored four runs, highlighted by a three-run home run from Brandon Gomez and a RBI-double from Antonio Rodriguez. The Sharks would score twice in the seventh inning, as Jake Anchia and Dylan Woods both singled home a run to give the Sharks a 6-0 lead.

The Sharks will be back in action Friday when they travel to Florida Southern for a massive regional series. Be sure to tune in to the games by following the team on Twitter at @NSU_Baseball and clicking on the links on the schedule page.
