BOCA RATON, Fla. – Nova Southeastern University softball (12-36, 2-22 SSC) fell 9-0 and 6-4 in Saturday's doubleheader against Sunshine State Conference opponent Lynn University (15-30-1, 4-16-1 SSC).
In the first game of the day,
Dajia Jones (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.) pitched four innings allowing 12 hits and picking up one strikeout. She moves to 4-13 on the season. Katelyn Key (7-9) gets the win holding the Sharks to two hits and striking out two.
The second game was a back and forth affair as Lynn maintained the lead until the Sharks tied things up 4-4 in the top of the sixth. The Fighting Knights secured the 6-4 win off a two-out two-RBI home run in the bottom of the seventh.
Megan Granitto (Fr., Wellington, Fla.) is now 6-13 giving up 10 hits, two walks and earning two strikeouts in the loss. Rachel Lightner (2-5) clinches the win allowing six hits and two walks.
Game 1
The Fighting Knights took an early lead off a three-run home run by Leanne Wright in the bottom of the first. The Sharks threatened in the top of the second with hits from Jones and
Ashley Roe (Jr., Flower Mound, Texas), but NSU would leave runners on the corners.
Lynn would score another six runs off of six hits in the bottom of the fourth. NSU would not answer, and the game would end in five.
Game 2
Game two had a similar start as game one with Lynn scoring two in the first three innings off of hits from Victoria Rios and Francais Olexa. The Sharks were able to tie things up in the top of the fourth as Villella began the inning with a single and advanced after a walk to Granitto.
Katey Blummer (Jr., Naples, Fla.) then reached on a throwing error which scored Villella. Granitto then came in to score on a second throwing error by the Fighting Knights tying things up 2-2.
Lynn was not giving up yet as Geena Capitini hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth and earning another run in the bottom of the fifth. NSU then came up with some offense of their own in the top of the sixth. After back-to-back singles from Jones and Blummer,
Sophia Devesa (Fr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) hit a double to right center to score them both and tie the game 4-4.
The Sharks' defense tried to hold on, but Olexa hit a two-out home run in the bottom of the seventh to secure a 6-4 win for the Fighting Knights.
The Sharks will play their final three games against Embry-Riddle in Daytona Beach, Florida beginning with a doubleheader on Friday, April 29 at 4 p.m.
