No. 20 NSU Battles to Scoreless Draw with 14th-Ranked ERAU

Ida Norstrom tallies season-high nine saves Wednesday night

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – In a back-and-forth affair Wednesday night, neither side was able to break through on its bevy of scoring chances as No. 14 Embry-Riddle and No. 20 Nova Southeastern eventually settled for a hard-fought 0-0 double overtime draw at the NSU Soccer Complex.

The first draw of the season for either club, Nova Southeastern now sits at 7-1-1 on the year, while Embry-Riddle now owns a record of 4-1-1.

Both keepers shined in the matchup that may very well arise again once NCAA Tournament time rolls around in November. The Sharks' Ida Norstrom was credited with her fourth shutout in 2016 following a season-high nine saves. Her counterpart, meanwhile, in fellow freshman Fanny Kristiansson, turned away 10 shots in the effort to hold Nova Southeastern scoreless for the first time this season.

The Sharks displayed incredible energy all night, most notably from forwards Alexys Nowak and Nichole Poppe. Poppe, the lone senior in the starting lineup, nearly put the Sharks on the scoreboard in the 39th minute, but saw her shot attempt deflect off the crossbar and out of bounds.

Just over four minutes later the crossbar once again played a factor, only this time preventing Tova Nilsson from giving Nova Southeastern the 1-0 edge before intermission.

Still scoreless in the 59th minute, the Eagles put a scare into the Shark faithful following Guro Naess Berge's header towards the net. However, Norstrom made the quick change of direction to come up with the diving save at the last moment.

Nova Southeastern continued to force the pressure on Embry-Riddle's back line down the stretch of regulation. Using her advantageous speed, Nowak darted down the left side of the field and found herself in a one-on-one situation with Kristiansson. Yet, the Eagles' keeper managed to poke the shot away and ultimately force the contest into extra time.

With the match in overtime, leading scorer Hannah Christophe nearly settled the outcome just minutes in. As she did time and time again, though, Kristiansson couldn't be cracked as the Eagles salvaged the gritty result against the Sharks.

Norstrom has now taken over sole possession for the league lead in goals-against average, yielding just 0.578 goals per contest.

Since officially joining the NCAA in 2002, NSU is 12-7-24 overall in overtime matches and has posted a record of 6-9-3 at home against ranked opponents.

Just beyond the midway point of the regular season, the Sharks will have the chance to get their legs under them with a full week off before traveling to face Lynn at 6 p.m. ET on September 28.
