NSU Tips Off New Year with Trip to Saint Leo Wednesday

Sharks, Lions to meet in rematch of 2016 SSC Tournament Quarterfinal

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – With the holiday season officially in the rearview mirror, Nova Southeastern will look to ring in the New Year on a high note when it jumps back into action Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET in a road meeting with Saint Leo.

The Sharks are currently in the midst of a two-game losing skid and sit at the bottom of the Sunshine State Conference standings, but have the chance to refocus and climb back into the thick of the SSC beginning Wednesday with their next 11 ball games coming against league competition.

Despite falling to Embry-Riddle its last time out on December 30, Nova Southeastern finally appears to have its most complete lineup back in form after starting forward Gerard Tarin returned from a three-game absence against the Eagles last week. The junior notched 17 points and five rebounds in 24 minutes of action to raise his season scoring average to 11.2, third-best on the team. In addition, head coach Gary Tuell may have found an added piece off the bench in Felipe Souza following the freshman's breakout performance in the losing effort. Prior to the meeting with Embry-Riddle, Souza had recorded a total of four points in 10 appearances this season, yet tallied 12 points and five boards including a perfect 2-of-2 shooting from beyond the arc.

Saint Leo ousted Nova Southeastern in the SSC Tournament Quarterfinal round a year ago en route to an NCAA Tournament berth, and entered this season with plenty of optimism after being firmly picked as the No. 2 team in the SSC preseason poll. However, the Lions have yet to hit their stride and enter the midweek matchup with the Sharks at 6-7 overall, alternating wins and losses in each of their previous six contests.

Still, despite their inconsistencies, the Lions possess two of the conference's most dynamic threats on the offensive end of the floor in Marcus Dewberry and Justin Satchell. Together, both rank among the top-10 in the SSC in scoring, combining for 36.2 points per game.

A DII Bulletin Preseason All-American, Dewberry has scored in double-figures in all but two contests this season, topping the 20-point mark on six separate occasions.

David Halberstam will have the call live from the Bowman Center. For complete coverage of the action, log onto NSUSharks.com or follow the Sharks on Twitter @NSU_MBasketball.
