SAINT LEO, Fla. – First-year head coach
Doug Neagle started his sunshine state conference debut on a high note as the No. 15 Nova Southeastern University women's tennis (3-2) upset the No. 4 Saint Leo lions (1-1) in a 7-1 victory Saturday afternoon in Saint Leo Fla.
For the second consecutive match, the Sharks swept the doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead.
Alex Kaeser and
Eva Agasse started the match dominating Katherine Zaantini and Megan Charlton in an 8-0 in win No. 3 doubles.
Simone Pratt and Nastassia Ruble quickly followed at No. 2 doubles improving their record to 5-0 defeating Madeline Gauthier and Fabiola Cardenas, 8-2.
Isabella Lowrey and
Luicelena Perez would secure the sweep with an 8-4 win over Marine Beurge-Guyot and Maja Pindelska at No. 1 doubles. Perez and Lowrey have now won 4 consecutive doubles matches.
The Sharks picked up right where they left off dominating the singles matches starting with
Eva Agasse and
Arina Sharonova in the fifth and sixth singles flights. Agasse picked up her collegiate win in singles defeating Megan Charlton, 6-0, 6-1 and Sharonova followed with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Katherin Zaatini. Rubel and Pratt also picked up victories in the second and third singles flights. Rubel defeated Fabiola Cardenas, 6-3, 6-2 while Pratt rallied to defeat Maja Pindelska, 1-6, 6-1, 6-1.
"I am very proud of the girls today," Neagle said. "We played aggressive but we also played disciplined. We set the bar high sweeping doubles and we kept that momentum going into the singles matches. Eva and Arina played a huge role in the fifth and sixth singles flights while Simone had a great bounce back in the second singles flight. It is a great win, but it is also a short victory as we will get back to work tomorrow against Tampa."
Women's tennis will back on the courts tomorrow in another SSC match facing the Tampa Spartans on Sunday Morning at 11 a.m.
