FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Despite its struggles throughout the season, Nova Southeastern looked anything but a team with a 5-16 record when it met Rollins in the year's first meeting back on January 11. The Sharks limited the Tars to their lowest season output, and held them to just 37.3 percent shooting, en route to a 63-56 victory. Head coach
Gary Tuell and company will hope a similar recipe results in a similar outcome when both teams square off once again Wednesday 7:30 p.m. ET in Winter Park, Florida.
The Sharks jumped out to a 13-point lead in the opening 20 minutes of the previous matchup before holding off Rollins down the stretch, despite the Tars closing to within one early in the second half. In line for his second straight all-conference recognition,
Harrison Goodrick notched a game-high 18 points to go along with eight rebounds in the effort, while
Troy Spears added 17 points in a full 40 minutes of action.
Goodrick had dealt with foul trouble in the recent weeks but avoided the whistles in Saturday's contest against Florida Tech, and as a result recorded his sixth double-double of the season with 25 points and 15 boards. The senior has averaged 19.8 points and 12.2 rebounds in Nova Southeastern's wins this season, and will be key if the Sharks are to rid themselves of their current six-game skid.
Rollins recovered with five consecutive victories following its loss to the Sharks last month, but has since dropped two in a row to Embry-Riddle and Eckerd by an average of 20.5 points. The latest defeat slid the Tars into a tie for fourth with Florida Southern in the Sunshine State Conference race, however, both Barry and Tampa remain on the schedule in the closing weeks of the regular season.
The Tars boast four players averaging double-figures, led by Sam Philpott and Jeff Merton. Philpott tops the team in scoring with 14.9 points, while Merton enters Wednesday scoring at a 14.3 point-per-game clip. Both players were held in check by the Sharks earlier this season, though, tallying a combined 22 points on 34.7 percent shooting.
The last two meetings in Winter Park have been decided by a total of five points, with NSU and Rollins each picking up a win apiece.
