Sharks Split With Maryville in Wednesday Doubleheader

Dana Edmundson tallied her third homerun of the season.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern softball team split a mid-week doubleheader at the AD Griffin Sports Complex on Wednesday with Maryville University.

The first game saw NSU's Lexie Storrer hold the visiting Saints to just one hit en route to a 3-0 victory before a seventh-inning rally by MU in game two resulted in a 3-2 victory on the other side.

With the split twinbill, the Sharks move to 12-15 on the year, while Maryville moves to an even 10-10.

GAME ONE

Nova Southeastern jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the first inning, scoring on an error by Maryville while trying to stop the double steal by Dana Edmundson and Dakota Villella.

An inning later, the Sharks padded their lead with an extra run as Lexie Storrer used an RBI-single to score Mary Acosta, who reached on a single to center field two batters prior.

After three scoreless frames, NSU added an insurance run in the home half of the sixth inning. With Alex Suzuki on third, Edmundson singled up the middle to plate her and give the Sharks a 3-0 advantage and eventual winning score.

Edmundson was 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored while Acosta was 2-for 3 and scored once.

Storrer (8-7) was awarded the win after working all 7.0 innings and allowing the one hit in the shut out. She also dished out six strikeouts, which ties her career-high in a game.

Maryville's Alyssa Callans takes the loss, giving up three runs (2 ER) on six hits in her 6.0 innings in the circle.

GAME TWO

Once again, the Sharks took advantage of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead, this time it was with a solo home run to center by Edmundson, her third of the season.

The next three innings were scoreless for either team, until the bottom of the fifth when the Sharks grabbed a 2-0 advantage. With one out on the board, Acosta singled up the middle and Edmundson doubled to center to put the Sharks in scoring position. A ground out by the next batter, Villella, was able to bring home Acosta for NSU's final run of the game.

With three outs left to go for the doubleheader sweep, MU rallied to score three runs in the top of the seventh. An error proved costly for NSU as two runs were able to come across the plate to knot the game, 2-2, before pinch hitter Courtney Klosinski sent a sacrifice line out to right, giving just enough time for Callans to score and MU to take the 3-2 lead and eventual victory.

Edmundson again was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored and Megan Maloney and Acosta tallied the other two of NSU's four hits.

Erica Winter (4-4) was handed the loss, pitching all 7.0 innings and allowing three runs on eight hits with two strikeouts.

Maryville's Nikki Taylor takes the win back home, allowing two runs on four hits with five strikeouts in her 7.0 innings of work.

The Sharks will continue their eight-game playing streak starting tomorrow with their first two games in THE Spring Games. At 3:00 p.m., NSU will open play with Southern Connecticut State, before taking on California University (Penn.) at 8:30 p.m. Live stats will only be available for the tournament, and can be found on the softball schedule page on NSUSharks.com.
