Sharks Blow by North Alabama in 2017 Debut, 3-1

Freshman Adanna Edwards shines in regional win

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Having lost their previous two meetings against North Alabama, the Nova Southeastern Sharks flipped the script with a 3-1 statement victory in Friday's season opener at home. In what figures to be the recipe for success in 2017, the Sharks leaned on their youth and speed, receiving goals from freshman Adanna Edwards and sophomores Alexys Nowak and Emma Heikkila in the effort.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Entered into the match off the bench in the 25th minute, Edwards wasted no time making an impact in her collegiate debut. The Sharks had knocked on the door on multiple occasions when Edwards finally broke through to give the home team a 1-0 cushion midway through the first half.
  • Clinging to the same 1-0 advantage in 77th minute, Edwards once again found herself in the mix, assisting Nowak for an uncontested goal to give the Sharks some breathing room.
  • Still, Nova Southeastern kept its foot on the gas pedal. In the 81st minute, with possession just outside the 18-yard box, Heikkila sized up a shot and lined a missile into the right upper-90 for the exclamation point on the win.
  • North Alabama erased the potential shutout with a penalty kick from Shelby Wall in the 87th minute, but the score proved to be far too little too late.
  • Senior Jordan Lentz collected three saves in net to earn her first victory of the year, improving to 10-1-2 overall for her career.

STATS OF THE NIGHT:
  • All three goals recorded by the Sharks were by underclassmen. Underclassmen accounted for nearly 83 percent of the Sharks' scores a year ago.
  • The Sharks' 13 shots in the first half nearly doubled North Alabama's shot total for the entire match (7).
  • Dating back to the 2015 season, Nova Southeastern is now unbeaten in 16 straight matches at home. Their last defeat at the NSU Soccer Complex actually came by way of North Alabama.
  • Head coach John Constable is now 3-0 in season openers since taking over at NSU.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
QUOTES FROM CONSTABLE:
  • "I'm proud of our players. It shows the progression of the program as well after North Alabama came down here two years ago and deservedly beat us 3-1. This was a fantastic win against a very tough team, but we know we have many more tough games to come."
  • "I'm proud of the way we attacked. We have a lot of speed. It was a goal of ours to increase the speed of the team."
