Despite Rainout, Sharks Finish Strong Weekend at Florida Tech in Sunday Sweep

INDIAN HARBOUR BEACH, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern women's tennis team wrapped up the fall season and the weekend tournament at the Florida Tech Panther Women's Clay Court Invitational, sweeping Florida Tech doubles competition on Sunday at the Kiwi Tennis Club; all singles matches were canceled due to rain.

Day 3 Recap

Doubles
  • With a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Florida Tech's Lauren Stuckey and Alahna Reto, the tandem of freshman Natalie Espinal and junior Sarah Wardenburg finished a perfect 3-0 in doubles competition on the weekend.
  • Junior Isabella Lowrey and freshman Diane Follin-Arbelet earned victory for the second consecutive day, defeating FIT's Paloma Vela / Maria Escude 6-3, 7-5 to end the weekend at 2-1 together.
  • Sophomore Alexandra Yeardley and freshman Caitlyn Khan teamed up once again for their second straight doubles win, pushing past FIT's Dina Dragoljic and Maria Chun 6-3, 6-3 to close out with a 2-1 record as a duo.

Singles
  • Singles matches were rained out along the Atlantic coast and the Sharks were unable to play the five matches scheduled for the day.
"That concludes our fall season on a high note," head coach Doug Neagle said. "Although we only played doubles, we swept all three matches against Florida Tech. I feel like we got some good match play this fall, giving our new players some experience. Coach Albers and myself like the way our young ladies are coming together as a team. Tennis is an individual sport, but talent only takes you so far. You need good team chemistry and I like what I see."
Shark Facts
  • The freshman from Tegucugalpa, Honduras, Espinal has racked up a fall record of 14-3 (8-2 singles) on the season.
  • Her partner the past two tournaments, junior transfer Wardenburg has gone 9-3 (3-2 singles).
  • Overall at FIT, the Sharks finished with a 15-5 (7-2 doubles) mark on the weekend.

Up Next: With the fall slate concluded, the Sharks will return to training until next semester, returning to the court at Flagler College on Feb. 3 in St. Augustine, Fla. After three on the road, NSU's first home match at the NSU Tennis Complex is scheduled against Florida National on Feb. 17.
