NSU Drops Two Close Ones on Day Two of The GCI

Sharks will wrap up play on Sunday

GULF SHORES, Ala. – On day two of the Gulf Coast Invitational, the Nova Southeastern softball team dropped a pair of games, eclipsing the halfway point through the tournament. The Sharks fell to West Georgia, 1-0, on Saturday morning before dropping their second game in extra innings, 10-8, to Alabama-Huntsville.
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
FINAL SCORE: West Georgia Wolves 1 (W: Foote, 2-0), Nova Southeastern Sharks 0 (L: Storrer, 0-3)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
BOTTOM 5TH: After four scoreless innings, the Wolves got on the board, 1-0, with an RBI-single by Mallory Walker.
 
INSIDE THE STATS:
  • Keeley Mayers and Mayte Lezcano were the lone Sharks to tally one hit apiece on Saturday morning.  
  • Lexie Storrer spent all 6.0 innings in the circle, allowing four hits and one run while dishing out two strikeouts.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • Only six hits were allowed between both teams.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
BOTTOM 1ST: NSU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the home half of the inning, as an error by the Chargers allowed Dana Edmundson to score, who was walked two batter prior.
 
TOP 2ND: UAH responded to NSU's single run with four of their own a half inning later, taking a 4-1 lead.
 
BOTTOM 2ND: A fielder's choice by Alabama-Huntsville allowed Mayte Lezcano reach first, stealing second a couple plays later. Megan Maloney drew a walk to put two runners on and a double by Edmundson brought them both home to cut the deficit to one run, 4-3.
 
TOP 3RD: The Chargers pushed their lead back out to three runs, 6-3, as Amber Hammonds sent a two-run homer over the left-center fence.
 
TOP 7TH: UAH tallied single runs in both the top of the sixth and the seventh for an 8-3 advantage heading into the bottom of the seventh.
 
BOTTOM 7TH: The Sharks exploded for five runs on five hits in the bottom half of the inning, knotting the game, 8-8, and forcing extras. Megan Maloney led off with a single through the left side and the next batter, Edmundson, sent her second double of the day to left center to score Maloney. After a fly out by Kailynn Blackwood, Lexie Storrer reached on a fielding error by the Chargers and a groundout by Kayla Kight put her on second and Edmundson on third. Back-to-back RBI-singles by Keeley Mayers and Daniela Bautista brought the two home and after a pitching change by UAH, Lezcano doubled to left center to score both Mayers and Bautista to tie it.
 
TOP 8TH: The Chargers weren't giving up, however, as they used an RBI-single and an RBI-triple to grab the lead back, 10-8, the eventual final score.
 
 
INSIDE THE STATS:
  • Edmundson had a day in Saturday's second game, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and two scored runs. She also drew one walk.
  • Lezcano was also solid, also going 2-for-4, and tallying two RBI while scoring once.
  • Bautista led the Sharks in hits, as she went 3-for-4, recording an RBI and a run.
  • Maloney was also able to score twice and draw one walk.
  • Storrer pitched her fourth straight game, tossing all 8.0 innings and allowing 10 runs (7 ER) with two strikeouts.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • The Sharks' eight runs were the most scored by the Sharks since Apr. 28 of the 2017 season.

UP NEXT: 

NSU will conclude play in the Gulf Shores Invitational on Sunday, Feb. 4 with another pair of games. The day's first game will be against Miles at 11:15 a.m. CST before the final game against Shorter at 1:30 p.m. CST.
