Softball Finishes GCI With Two Victories

Sharks will kick off home play on Feb. 9 against No. 3 West Florida

GULF SHORES, Ala. – On the final day of the Gulf Coast Invitational, the Nova Southeastern softball team picked up a pair of wins over Shorter University and Miles College. The Sharks topped the Hawks 4-3 before wrapping up play with a 4-1 victory over the Golden Bears.
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
FINAL SCORE: Nova Southeastern Sharks 4 (W: L. Storrer, 1-4), Shorter Hawks 3 (L: H. Draper, 0-3)
RECORDS: NSU (1-4), SU (2-3)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
BOTTOM 1ST: The Sharks wasted no time getting on the board a sacrifice fly by Kayla Kight allowed Dana Edmundson to score, who led the inning off with an infield single.
 
BOTTOM 2ND: With two outs on the board, Edmundson sent a two-RBI double to left field, scoring Megan Maloney and Madison Macik for a 3-0 advantage.
 
TOP 3RD: The Hawks cut the deficit to a single run, 3-2, an inning later, capitalizing on a fielder's choice and an error by the Sharks.
 
BOTTOM 3RD: NSU responded in the bottom half of the inning, recording its final run of the game when the Hawks committed a throwing error after a Daniela Bautista single, allowing Lexie Storrer to cross the plate for a 4-2 edge.
 
TOP 4TH: The final run of the game came in the fourth as Shorter's Carson Carriker singled to shortstop, and a muffed throw by the Sharks brought Maddie Hunt home.
 
INSIDE THE STATS:
  • Three Sharks tallied two hits in Sunday morning's game, as Edmundson and Storrer were 2-for-4 and Kailynn Blackwood went 2-for-3. Edmundson also added two RBI and Storrer had one scored run.
  • In addition to her one RBI, Kight also drew two walks.
  • Storrer recorded her first win of the season, tossing all 7.0 innings and allowing three only runs on 11 hits.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • The Hawks outhit the Sharks 11-9 on the day.
  • This was just the second time in history the two teams met.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
TOP 1ST: For the third-straight game, the Sharks were the first to reach the scoreboard as Edmundson was able to steal second, third and eventually home after leading the inning off with a single through the right side.
 
TOP 2ND: NSU added another run to increase their lead to 2-0 an inning later as a wild pitch allowed Keeley Mayers to score after sending a first-pitch double to left field four batters prior.
 
TOP 4TH: With the bases loaded, Megan Maloney singled through the left side, plating Bautista for a 3-0 advantage. After a wild pitch advanced the runners and Edmundson was hit by a pitch, a sacrifice fly by Blackwood was able to bring Macik home to tally NSU's final run of the game.
 
BOTTOM 7TH: The Bears' lone run of the game came in the last inning as an RBI-single by Ombreyah Daly scored Davis Watkins, who led off with a double down the left-field line.
 
INSIDE THE STATS:
  • Not one Shark had multiple hits, but six were able to tally one hit apiece.
  • Maloney and Storrer both picked up single RBIs.
  • The Sharks were walked seven times, as Macik drew three of her own.
  • NSU outhit MC 6-4.
  • Storrer grabbed her second win of the day after her 7.0 innings in the circle, allowing one run on four hits with five strikeouts.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • The Bears' first hit didn't come until the fifth inning.
  • Storrer's five strikeouts were a season-high and her four hits allowed were a season-low.
  • This was the first time in history Miles and Nova Southeastern squared off.  

UP NEXT: 

The Sharks will kick off home play this Friday, Feb. 9 as they host No. 3 West Florida in a doubleheader beginning at 5:00 p.m.
