No. 3 West Florida Takes Two From Sharks

NSU will continue opening weekend with another doubleheader tomorrow

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – On opening day under the lights at the AD Griffin Sports Complex, the Nova Southeastern softball team dropped two games to the visiting No. 3 West Florida Argonauts.
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
FINAL SCORE: No. 3 West Florida Argos 2 (W: S. Maloney, 1-1), Nova Southeastern Sharks 1 (L: Storrer, 2-5)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
TOP 4TH: After three scoreless innings, the Argos were the first to reach the board, taking advantage of a Shark error and a Tori Perkins single for a 1-0 lead.
 
TOP 7TH: West Florida increased its lead to 2-0 two innings later as a walk drawn by Rhiannon Sassman with the bases loaded forced a runner home.
 
BOTTOM 7TH: The Sharks attempted to rally, but failed, tallying only one run in the home half of the seventh. With two outs and Sydney Lageyre on first, a single by Dana Edmundson moved her all the way to third to put runners on the corners. An error by UWF's pitcher on Kailynn Blackwood's hit allowed her to reach and Lageyre to race across the plate.
  
INSIDE THE STATS:
  • The Sharks were only allowed four hits in the first game, and they were all posted by four different players. Edmundson, Blackwood, Daniela Bautista and Lageyre accounted for the hits.
  • Lexie Storrer was handed the loss, tossing all 7.0 innings and allowing two runs (1 ER) on nine hits with five strikeouts.
  • UWF's pitcher, Sarah Maloney was on fire in the circle, dishing out 15 strikeouts and only walking one.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
TOP 4TH: Once again, the Argos struck first, taking a 2-0 edge over the Sharks with an RBI-double by Ally Merrill and an RBI-single by Jacquelynne Poling, both runs unearned.
 
TOP 5TH: After an NSU pitching change from Dominique Sprengers back to Storrer, the Argos tacked on an insurance run with an RBI-single up the middle.
 
TOP 6TH: UWF's final two runs came in the top of the sixth, tallying two on back-to-back RBI-singles.
 
 
INSIDE THE STATS:
  • Both Edmundson and Aly Loyd ended 2-for-3 at the plate while Blackwood was 1-for-2 and walked once.
  • Kayla Kight, Keeley Mayers and Daniela Bautista accounted for the three other hits recorded by NSU, amounting to nine total.
  • Sprengers took her first loss of the season, pitching the first four innings and allowing two runs (0 ER) on three hits with two strikeouts.
  • Storrer closed out the final 3.0 innings, allowing three runs on four hits with two strikeouts.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • The Sharks were able to hold off the third-ranked Argos through three innings, forcing them to strand four runners on base.
  • This was the second time the two teams met this year, the first time was in the Gulf Coast Invitational where the Argos topped the Sharks 4-2.

UP NEXT: 
The Sharks will play another two tomorrow, this time against the Pittsburg State Gorillas. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
