NSU Drops Game One At The Hands of Eckerd's Grand Slam

Suzuki records her first homer of the season

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Leading all the way into the bottom of the sixth inning, a grand slam by Eckerd's Nikole Van Gennep doomed the Nova Southeastern softball team in the first game of a three-game series against the host Tritons, 7-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

BOTTOM 2ND: With the bases loaded thanks to three-consecutive singles by Daniela Bautista, Keeley Mayers and Sydney Lageyre, Kailynn Blackwood drew a walk to put the Sharks on the board with a 1-0 lead.

TOP 3 | After a single by Lexie Storrer, Alex Suzuki sent the long ball over the left field fence, pushing the Sharks to a 3-0 advantage.

BOTTOM 3 | Eckerd responded with a homer of their own in the home half of the inning, as Kayelee Newstrom put the Tritons on the board with a solo home run.

BOTTOM 6 | The Tritons came within one with an RBI-double by Janna Gaburo before an error by the Sharks allowed the Tritons to tie it up, 3-3. EC's next batter, Nikole Van Gennep, sent a grand slam over the center field fence for a 7-3 home team lead and eventual final score.

INSIDE THE STATS:
  • Blackwood and Lageyre finished 2-for-3, while Blackwood added one RBI.
  • Both Storrer and Suzuki were 2-for-4, with Storrer scoring once and Suzuki tallying two RBI from her home run.
  • Storrer fell to 9-13 on the season after tossing the full 6.0 innings and allowing seven runs on seven hits with two strikeouts.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • Suzuki's homer was her first of the season.
  • The Sharks outhit the Tritons, 11-7.
