Sharks Drop Series To Sailfish Due To Doubleheader Sweep

NSU will close out the 2018 season next weekend

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Sunshine State Champions No. 8 Palm Beach Atlantic grabbed both ends of a doubleheader against the Nova Southeastern softball team, ultimately claiming the series, 2-1. Errors proved costly for NSU in both games as the Sailfish took game one, 7-2, before finishing on top, 4-2, in the nightcap.
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUP (GAME ONE):
FINAL: No. 8 Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish 7 (W: A. Busby, 13-1), Nova Southeastern Sharks 2 (L: L. Storrer, 13-20),

HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
BOTTOM 3RD: After two scoreless innings, the Sharks took their lone lead of the game in the third. Drawing a leadoff walk, Kayla Kight stole second to put NSU in scoring position before a groundout by Blackwood pushed her to third. Two batters later, Dana Edmundson sent an RBI-single through the right side to score Kight for the 1-0 Shark edge.
 
TOP 4TH: The Sailfish responded in the top of the fourth, capitalizing on RBI doubles by Hannah Carlton and Maddie Biggs and an error by the Sharks to take a 4-1 lead.
 
BOTTOM 4TH: Leading off the inning, Daniela Bautista doubled to left center and after a walk drawn by Keeley Mayers and Kight was hit by a pitch, an RBI-single by Blackwood plate Bautista to bring the score to 4-2 in PBA's favor.
 
TOP 5TH: PBA went up 6-2 after tallying to on an RBI-triple by Carlton and a ground out by Maddie Bertisch.
 
TOP 7TH: An RBI-single by Claudia Pizzarelli scoring Michaela Hynes accounted for PBA's final run, and ultimate 7-2 victory.  
 
INSIDE THE STATS:
 
  • Blackwood and Edmundson both finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
  • Bautista accounted for the fifth hit by the Sharks, going 1-for- 3 with one run scored.
  • Storrer was handed the loss as she pitched the full 7.0 innings and allowed seven runs (6 ER) on 12 hits.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
 
  • The 12 hits tallied by the Sailfish were the most allowed at AD Griffin this season.
 
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUP (GAME TWO):

HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
TOP 1ST: With the bases loaded and two outs, back-to-back errors by the Sharks proved costly as the Sailfish were able to grab a 3-0 early advantage.
 
BOTTOM 3RD: Reaching on a fielder's choice, Blackwood was pushed to second as Edmundson was hit by a pitch. The next batter, Suzuki, singled to left field, scoring Blackwood and cutting the deficit to two runs.
 
BOTTOM 6TH: With Sydney Lageyre at first and Mayers at third, Megan Maloney singled through the right side to bring NSU within one, 3-2.
 
TOP 7TH: The Sailfish extended their lead back out to two runs, 4-2, in the seventh as Biggs doubled to left center, scoring Bertisch.
 
INSIDE THE STATS:
 
  • Suzuki tallied two of NSU's four hits, finishing 2-for-4 with an RBI.
  • Storrer and Maloney were each 1-for-3, while Maloney recorded one RBI.
  • Storrer was saddled with the loss, tossing all 7.0 innings with four runs (1 ER) allowed on 11 hits. She also tallied three strikeouts.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
 
  • With the doubleheader sweep, PBA claims the series, 2-1.
  • Despite last night's loss, the Sailfish clinch the Sunshine State Conference title.
 
 
UP NEXT
 
The Sharks will close out the 2018 season next weekend as the host Florida Southern. The first game is slated to being at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, Apr. 27.
