HOW IT HAPPENED:
The offense foreshadowed the prowess they would display as soon as the game started, when
Dylan Harris led off the game with a home run and was followed by another by
Jake Anchia just three batters later, handing starter
Devin Conn a 2-0 lead before he even took the mound.
The Lions, however, came right back with two of their own. After a pair of singles to start the bottom of the first, they scored on an RBI groundout and a two-out single to even the score.
The Sharks showed no signs of slowing down, though, and after a bunt by Harris got the lead back, they added three straight two-out singles to add two more in the inning. Meanwhile, Conn settled into a groove and, starting with a double play to end the second, retired ten Lions in a row through the end of the fifth.
The hits continued into the third inning, as a double steal put two in scoring position for
Jeffrey Cyr, who drove in both runners with a single to center, already the team's tenth hit of the day to put them up 7-2. After back-to-back singles to begin the fourth,
Ian Acevedo dribbled one back to the pitcher for an 8-2 lead.
Andrew Liberty carried over his hot hitting from Friday's night's game with a two-run double, followed by a two-run shot by Anchia for second homer of the game, both with two outs, and the Sharks went up 12-2. The Sharks ran their scoring streak to six innings to start the game when
Nick Gallo homered for the second game in a row, scoring three more, once again with two outs.
Saint Leo got two runs back in the bottom of the sixth, but Conn induced a pair of whiffs to end the inning and keep the lead in double-digits, 15-4.
The Sharks were finally kept off the scoreboard in the 7
th inning, also the only inning all game in which they did not record a hit. They made up for it in the 8
th, though, as each of the first four Sharks came around to score in the inning.
Samuel Duran doubled and scored on another single by Cyr, his fifth hit of the game, and was followed immediately by a three-run homer by Harris, joining Anchia in the two-homer club, to take the game to its final score of 19-4. The fun was still not yet over for the Sharks' potent offensive attack. With two outs in the ninth, Cyr drove a single through the left side, to tie the program's single-game record with six hits.
Gil Torres notched two scoreless innings in relief of Conn, and
Kyle Kilbourne set the Lions down 1-2-3 in the 9
th to bring it home.
STATS OF THE NIGHT:
- The Sharks tallied 26 hits as a team, exceeding their previous season-high of 20 in the series finale last month against Florida Tech. They also hit five home runs, one better than in the middle game of their sweep two weeks ago against Palm Beach Atlantic.
- In addition to Cyr, Anchia also had four hits, while Liberty, Acevedo, Duran and Nathan Chevalier notched three each and Harris and Gallo had two apiece.
- Harris also scored four runs, while Duran, Chevalier and Cyr crossed the plate three times each, followed by Gallo, Liberty and Anchia at two.
- The top four spots in the Sharks lineup combined for 15 RBI and 10 runs scored, while the seven through nine hitters totaled 12 hits in 16 at-bats, while scoring nine times.
- Anchia had his third multi-homer game of the season and fifth of his career, adding on to his program record, which now stands at 39 home runs, while Harris had his first multi-homer game in a Sharks uniform in the second game of his return to Saint Leo.
- Despite not recording any strikeouts in his first three innings of work, Conn, the team's leader with 72 entering the series, notched two in each of his last three innings, putting him at 78 on the year, well on his way to become the Sharks' first pitcher to reach the century mark since current Detroit Tigers starter Mike Fiers set the program record of 145, leading all Division II pitchers in 2009.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- Cyr's six-hit game is the program's first since Jancarlos Cintron on April 22 of last season at Embry-Riddle, a 17-4 Sharks win. He's the first with six hits in six at-bats since Kavan Thompson, who was also a freshman, on March 16, 2013 in a 26-2 victory, which he followed up with a 3-for-3 performance in the doubleheader's nightcap, giving him nine hits on the day. The last six-hit game before that, and the most recent one at home, was Joe Zinerco's on March 26, 2003 against Felician College.
- After 257 career hits in his Lions career, Dylan Harris added two more hits today, both home runs, and now leads the team with 52 in only 31 games. He's up to 307 total, tied for third all-time in SSC history, tied for 24th all-time in NCAA Division II history. He also extended his team-longest hitting and on-base streaks to 15 and 19 games, respectively.
- The Sharks have now won ten SSC games in a row, one short of tying their longest streak in program history, 11 straight from March 19-April 29 of 2016, including consecutive sweeps of Saint Leo, Barry and Rollins, en route to the first National Championship in program history.
- They've also won 14 straight against Saint Leo, having swept the Lions each of the last four years dating back to 2014.
