FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – In an anticipated season opener to kick-off the 2018 campaign, Nova Southeastern stumbled against Gulf South Conference opponent Mississippi College by a final score of 3-1 Thursday night.
Sebastian Loibl registered his first goal as a Shark, yet a handful of defensive miscues proved costly as head coach
Matt Watts' club could never fully recover from a 2-0 deficit early in the second half.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Nova Southeastern controlled the majority of the first half before allowing a late goal off a free kick by Victor Bazan in the 41st minute.
- Coming out hot in the second half, the Choctaws extended their lead in the 52nd minute off a header by substitute Joshua Robinson.
- The Sharks continued to battle, and erased the Choctaws momentum with a goal in the 63rd minute. Loibl worked a give-and-go with Darwin Lom and finished with a strike from the left edge of the box to cut the deficit in half.
- The Sharks continued to pressure the Choctaws with some quality opportunities later in the half, but could not capitalize.
- Eventually, the Choctaws put the match out of reach with a goal in the 82nd minute by Robinson, who ended with two goals in the game.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- An All-American a year ago, Loibl tallied his first goal as a Shark after racking up 15 while at Mount Olive last fall.
- Nova Southeastern started six new faces on Thursday, including three who played the entire 90 minutes – Jan Luca Ahillen, Bradley Fountain and Titouan Le Roux.
STATS OF THE NIGHT:
- Nova Southeastern dominated the numbers, outshooting Mississippi College by a 20-14 margin while also winning the corner kick battle, 7-2.
- Fountain and Loibl each recorded three shots on goal to lead the way offensively for the Sharks.
