Lom’s Late Strike Secures Dominant 1-0 Win

Sharks outshoot Ave Maria 31-1 Thursday night

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.  –  Nova Southeastern needed nearly 83 minutes, but all frustration was eventually lifted, as Ignacio Goya linked up with Darwin Lom late to lift the Sharks to a 1-0 win over Ave Maria at the NSU Soccer Complex. Nova Southeastern racked up 31 shots in the effort, as opposed to just one for the Gyrenes, yet needed each and every one of them before the final attempt proved to be the difference in the Sharks' second straight victory of the young season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Sharks had countless opportunities to climb in front, including near-misses by Goya and Michael Lawrence, but could not capitalize in the first half.
  • Despite the scoreless tie at the break, the Sharks led the Gyrenes by an 11-0 margin in total shots. It was Ave Maria keeper Andrea Salomone (finished with 10 saves), however, who stood tall to keep the match deadlocked.
  • Fast forward to the 83rd minute when Aleks Berg played the ball to the feet of Goya in the box, who found Lom for the strike towards the bottom right corner of the net to send the Shark faithful home happy.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • With the win, Nova Southeastern now improves to 5-0 in the all-time series against Ave Maria.
  • Berg combined with Goya on the game-winning assist, giving him four points over his last two matches.
  • Defender Curtis Thorn made his Nova Southeastern debut Thursday, logging 83 minutes.
STATS OF THE NIGHT:
  • Dating back to 2015, the Sharks have yet to allow a goal in the last 266:49 versus the Gyrenes.
  • Keeper Titouan Le Roux notched his first clean sheet as a Shark despite recording a single save in the effort.
  • The Sharks held the Gyrenes without a shot until the 53:48 mark of the second half.
  • Nova Southeastern not only held a 31-1 advantage in shots, but also won the corner kick battle by a deciding 13-0 margin.
