FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – An early deficit in the fourth minute put a damper on the home opener for Nova Southeastern, as fifth-ranked Columbus State used the quick start en route to an eventual 3-1 win over the Sharks Friday night.
Emma Heikkila recorded her second goal of the season thanks to a penalty kick in the 70
th minute, yet Nova Southeastern was unable to surmount any sort of comeback despite an offensive surge in the second half.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Columbus State took the air out of a packed NSU Soccer Complex just 3:21 into the match when Riley Clark settled a pass from Kimmy May and hammered home a clean look from just inside the 18-yard box to hand the Cougars a 1-0 edge.
- The Sharks would settle in defensively, but managed only three shots in the opening half as the 1-0 margin remained intact heading into the break.
- A brilliant sliding save by Nova Southeastern keeper Shannon Hearty kept Columbus State off the board in the opening moments of the second half. However, there was no answer for the Cougar attack in the 57th minute when Clark struck again to double the lead for the visitors.
- Less than four minutes later, Maddy Peterson built the advantage to 3-0 after being set-up nicely by both May and Abby Marmito.
- Following a rip off the crossbar by Heikkila in the 70th minute, a hard foul committed in the box resulted in a penalty kick opportunity for the Sharks. Calmly stepping up to take the attempt, Heikkila erased the shutout by drilling her second score of the year into the left corner of the net.
- Nova Southeastern created chances down the stretch, including a shot on target from freshman Emily O'Connell. However, the Cougars weathered the late push to remain unbeaten in 2018.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Forward Emily Morgan appeared in her first game action for the Sharks after missing the last two seasons due to injury.
- Heikkila has now tallied at least one point in each of the three matches she has appeared in this season.
STATS OF THE NIGHT:
- Hearty set a new career high with six saves in the effort.
- Despite the loss, the Sharks held an advantage in both shots (18-14) and corner kicks (7-4) Friday.
