HOW IT HAPPENED:
- NSU needed no time settling in on Saturday, forcing the issue on the offensive end in the early moments of the match. A yellow card issued to Eckerd keeper Lynden Dawson in the opening minute landed the Sharks a free kick from the edge of the 18-yard box. Matty Cornish nearly delivered a beauty of a strike, yet had his attempt deflect off the cross bar.
- The Sharks tallied two more shots less than two minutes into game. Michael Lawrence's attempt was corralled by Dawson, however, before H. Berg watched his sail wide of the net.
- Eckerd registered its first shot of the match at the 14:34 mark, but wouldn't threaten again until the 37th minute.
- In the meantime, Curtis Thorn cashed in with his second penalty kick goal of the season in the 30th minute after Aleks Berg was taken down in the box.
- The 1-0 edge would hold heading into the break following a pair of saves by NSU keeper Brian Lopez down the stretch of the first half.
- The Sharks came inches away from doubling their lead in the 73rd minute. Isidoro Garcia's header was turned away at the last second, though, keeping the Tritons within striking distance.
- What a momentum swing it was because Eckerd soon countered in the 77th minute when leading goal scorer Augustin Pertusso tallied his 10th score of the season on a well-placed shot into the low, left corner of the net.
- With the match back even in the 84th minute, extra time appeared evident. However, NSU erased any thoughts of bonus action, as Thorn played a perfect ball over the top from the backline to H. Berg, who buried the left-footed shot into the back of the net for his third goal of the season.
- Eckerd earned a corner kick in the 88th minute, but the Sharks held the Tritons without a shot during the sequence, securing the 2-1 triumph.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Following Saturday's victory, NSU is now one of seven teams in the SSC with exactly two conference wins.
- Thorn is now only the second NSU player in the last 10 years to convert two penalty kicks in the same season.
STATS OF THE NIGHT:
- Thorn's three points in the win set a new single-game, career high. The defender entered the match with just two all season.
- The Sharks outshot the Tritons by a margin of 18-8.
- Filling in for Titouan Le Roux, Lopez tallied three saves en route to his fifth career victory.
