Loibl, NSU Offense Too Much for Defending National Champs

Sharks start fast en route to 5-2 win over Barry

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Sebastian Loibl erased a nine-game goalless streak with a pair of scores, as Nova Southeastern jumped out to a 3-0 lead at halftime on its way to an eventual 5-2 victory at home against defending national champion Barry on Wednesday night. The win extends the Sharks' current streak to a season-high three games, and moves the team to within one point of third in the Sunshine State Conference race still with three regular season matches remaining.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Sharks needed just 9:05 into Wednesday's match to make an early statement after Michael Lawrence's well-played ball across the goalmouth found the foot of Matty Cornish for a one-time strike into the back of the net.
  • Feeding off the energy, NSU doubled its lead in the 22nd minute when Tino Miguez linked up with Loibl, who drilled a shot into the right, upper 90 for his first goal in SSC play this season.
  • Loibl soon added to his total in the 36th minute, this time ending up on the receiving end of a beautiful through ball from center back Curtis Thorn to extend the advantage to 3-0.
  • Barry erased the shutout following a converted penalty kick in the 54th minute, but the Sharks would need only 31 seconds to respond, as Henrik Berg connected on his second goal in as many games to push the margin back to three.
  • Milos Christoforou joined in on the action, providing the goal of the night (see below) on a bending ball from about 20 yards out, padding the lead to 5-1.
  • The Bucs added a late score in the 82nd minute, but the Sharks' offensive flurry proved to be too much in yet another promising effort down the stretch of the regular season.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • The Sharks' five goals marked their most in an SSC game since matching that total at home against Saint Leo on Oct. 13, 2018.
  • NSU continues to pace the league in scoring average, nearly tallying 2.7 goals per game.
STATS OF THE NIGHT:
  • Sophomore keeper Brian Lopez matched a career high with five saves in the effort, improving to 2-0 overall on the season.
  • NSU was whistled for 21 fouls in the match, as opposed to just six for Barry.
