FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Holding a two-set lead over the visiting Embry-Riddle Eagles, the Nova Southeastern Sharks suffered a five-set loss after ERAU came back to take the next three sets, including a 20-18 fifth-set marathon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
SET 1 | Down 5-2, the Sharks gained momentum off a block by
Brittany Landrum and
Ally Ford to tie things up a few points later, 5-5. The Sharks were able to ties the game a couple more times, but it was the Eagles who stayed mostly in control until at 15-14 in ERAU's favor, a kill by
Madison Cook ignited a 7-1 run to give NSU a 21-16 lead. The Eagles were able to score one last point before a 4-0 run started by a kill by
McKenna Tucek led the Sharks to a 25-17 victory.
SET 2 | The first half of the second set was very back and forth, with each team earning the lead twice and tying the match up six times. At 11-10 with ERAU ahead, NSU took a timeout and returned to the floor to rattle off three straight points including a kill by
Emily Sippel and two by
Sami Spadaro to take a 13-11 edge, a lead they would never get rid of. A Shark error allowed the Eagles to come within one at 19-18, but a 5-0 run by NSU made it set point, 24-18. After a pair of ERAU points, a kill by Sippel pushed NSU to the 25-20 win they needed for the 2-0 overall lead.
SET 3 | Multi-point runs were the theme of the third set, as each team utilized their service possession to exchange the lead all the way until the end. Back-to-back errors by ERAU gave NSU a 21-20 lead and as the Sharks could taste a three-set sweep, a 4-0 Eagle run paused those thoughts, giving Embry-Riddle set point at 24-21. A kill by
McKenna Tucek brought NSU within two at 24-22, before an Eagle block forced a fourth set with a 25-22 ERAU win.
SET 4 | It was all Embry-Riddle in the first half of set four, as the Eagles took an early 7-2 lead and forced NSU to call timeout. Down 17-11, the Sharks fought back, utilizing a 6-1 run capped with back-to-back kills by Sippel to come within one at 18-17. After an Eagle block, a kill by
Alex Boone and a block by Boone and Sippel knotted the game, 19-19. The Sharks were able to tie the game again at 21-21, before a 4-0 run by ERAU ended the set and force the fifth and final decision set.
SET 5 | ERAU jumped out to a 6-2 lead, before a kill by Boone and an ace by
Ally Ford cut the deficit to two at 6-4. After another Embry-Riddle point, another kill by Boone and an ace by
Aleyna Kennel made it a one-point game at 7-6. ERAU wouldn't let go of their lead, however, until at 14-12, a kill by Boone sparked a 3-0 run by NSU to put set-point, 15-14, on Nova Southeastern's side, forcing ERAU to call timeout. NSU held the edge, earning set-point at 16-15 and 17-16, but a 4-1 run by Embry-Riddle allowed the Eagles to steal the win from the Sharks, giving the visitors the overall 3-2 victory with a 20-18 extra-point fifth set win.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Boone led all Sharks with her 14 kills, adding six block assists. Out of 23 attempts, the starting middle only made one error, as she ended with a .565 hitting percentage.
- Tucek recorded 13 kills and Ford has 12, while Ford assisted on four blocks and made five digs.
- Landrum was another Shark in double-digit kills, tallying 10 while assisting on five blocks and making one solo. She also had three digs.
- Spadaro registered nine kills and three blocks, while Sippel had seven kills to go with 14 digs.
- Madison Cook contributed 30 assists and made six digs while Caylee Cox has 25 assists and made it a double-double with 14 digs.
- Kennel picked up a team-high 20 digs while Jess Barrett had 12.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Boone's 14 kills were her second-most tallied of the season.
- Cook's 30 assists marked her second game with 30+ assists, her second game this week.
- Today's loss brings the overall series to 17-14 in favor of the Sharks.
