Four Sharks Earn All-SSC Men’s Soccer Selections

Jan Luca Ahillen, Sebastian Loibl and Curtis Thorn named All-SSC First Team members

MELBOURNE, Fla. – On the eve of its Sunshine State Conference Tournament semifinal matchup, the Nova Southeastern men's soccer team is already making headlines, as four Sharks were name All-SSC selections on Wednesday afternoon. Jan Luca Ahillen, Sebastian Loibl and Curtis Thorn were each recognized as first-team members, tying NSU for the most first-team honorees on the list, while Michael Lawrence followed suit on the All-SSC Second Team.

Voting was conducted among each of the league's coaches.

Ahillen has been the key cog in the middle of the Sharks' lineup in 2019, playing 90-plus minutes in 13 of his 16 overall starts. The German has registered eight points on two goals and four assists, although his impact on the team extends well beyond the numbers serving as one of the club's captains this fall. The All-SSC honor marks the first of his NSU career.

Loibl collects his second consecutive first-team honor after following up 2018's 10-goal and five-assist campaign with nine goals and seven more assists – both team highs – in 2019. His numbers each rank among the Top-3 in the SSC. Loibl became just the second player since the program joined the NCAA to notch multiple career hat tricks after accomplishing the feat earlier this month. The hat trick was part of the junior's second seven-point output this season, as he's played his best soccer of the year down the stretch.

Thorn, meanwhile, has been a force on the NSU backline in his final season, carrying the Sharks to a combined five shutouts - one of those coming at then-No. 5 Lynn. Another team captain, the Englishman ranks second on the team in minutes (1,457), and has started all but one match in 2019. Along the way, he recorded a career-high three points in a 2-1 win over Eckerd on Oct. 19, giving him a total of six entering the postseason.

Playing alongside Loibl, Lawrence has provided the Sharks with arguably the most formidable pair of forwards in the SSC. In 14 starts as a sophomore, the Miramar, Fla. native has accounted for seven goals, which ranks second on the team and tied for fourth overall in the league. Lawrence has tallied two multi-goal performances this season, and has also added two assists. His efforts helped the Sharks finish atop the SSC in scoring during the regular season.

Palm Beach Atlantic's Cadu Cusatis was awarded both SSC Player of the Year and SSC Offensive Player of the Year. Rodrigo Ferandez of Lynn captured Defensive Player of the Year honors, with the Fighting Knights' John Rootes taking home SSC Coach of the Year. Florida Tech's Ellis Hudson was tabbed Freshman of the Year.

In a rematch of a scoreless draw back in Sept., NSU will head to Boca Raton on Thursday for a SSC Tournament semifinal showdown against top-seeded Lynn. For complete coverage of the action, visit the schedule page on NSUSharks.com or follow the Sharks on Twitter @NSU_MSoccer.
