MELBOURNE, Fla. – Following her dominant performance at the season-opening World Golf Invitational, Nova Southeastern's Sofia Garcia Austt has been selected as the Sunshine State Conference Women's Golfer of the Week, announced by the league office Monday afternoon.
With the nation's No. 1 player, Sophie Madden, absent from the lineup last week, Garcia Austt rose to the occasion by leading the third-ranked Sharks to a 23-stroke win in St. Augustine, Fla. The sophomore impressed throughout the tournament, pairing her opening-round 67 with a 69 in the final round to earn individual medalist honors in wire-to-wire fashion. Garcia Austt was one of just three players among the field to post red numbers, finishing five strokes clear of second place at eight-under par overall.
Both the tournament win and SSC nod are the first of Garcia Austt's career.
Nova Southeastern will return to the course next Monday, Feb. 18 at the Lady Moc Classic, hosted by Florida Southern. To stay up-to-date with the Sharks, follow them on Twitter @NSU_WGolf.
