Sharks Tennis Tops Florida National in Third Consecutive Sweep

NSU mixed lineups and went 7-0 for the third time in as many tries

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Marking their 2019 home opener at the NSU Tennis Complex, Nova Southeastern women's tennis (4-0) delivered their third consecutive 7-0 sweep victory on Sunday morning, topping first-year program Florida National (1-4), which traveled up from Hialeah, Fla.

Doubles
  • Entering the weekend, the Sharks had yet to drop a doubles set this spring and Sunday was no exception - NSU quickly securing the team point in the sweep.
  • First to finish, the No. 2 pair of junior Isabella Lowrey and freshman Diane Follin-Arbelet wrapped quickly with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep over Nathalia Vivas Gomez and Andrea Guuzman.
  • At No. 1 doubles, junior Sarah Wardenburg and freshman Natalie Espinal weren't far behind, topping Candela Bonivardi and Sofia Victoria Pera also in straight sets at 6-0, 6-0.
  • Closing out doubles sweep with the third straight-sets win, as Sunday's No. 3 sophomore Ivana Djordjevic saw her first doubles action of the year with sophomore partner Chantal Nosievici, defeating Moana de Souza and Ana Luiza Barreto, 6-0, 6-0.
Singles
  • Playing in the first flight, rookie star Espinal showed why she's ranked at No. 13 in the ITA rankings, clearing Bonivardi in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 as the first finisher.
  • Nosievici also went in straight sets over Guuzman from the fourth flight.
  • In the fifth flight, sophomore Alexandria Yeardley finished off de Souza with a 6-0, 6-1 ending.
  • As the No. 3, Follin-Arbelet wrapped up against Vivas Gomez, 6-1, 6-2.
  • Getting a fight from Pera, Wardenburg was overpowering down the stretch for the 6-3, 6-1 win in No. 2 singles.
  • At the six spot, freshman Caitlyn Khan earned her first official career singles win, fighting off Barreto for a 6-4, 6-2 victory to secure the 7-0 NSU sweep of the Conquistadors.
From Coach Doug Neagle
"It's always nice to start out at home with a win," Neagle said. "We got a lot of players in there and got everybody some good experience, so I feel like our whole team is going to be more prepared as the season goes. Florida National is in a building year and they'll get better fast. This is their first year and it's pretty special to play against their women's team in the inaugural season. Now we need to really focus for the coming week, we have our first conference match coming up, away."

Up Next: Things heat up really quickly for the Sharks, who are looking at a three-match week—all against Sunshine State Conference opposition. NSU opens SSC play on the road Thursday at Palm Beach Atlantic (0-1). The Sharks then return home to host Embry-Riddle (0-1) and No. 20 Rollins (1-0) on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
