HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Barry Buccaneers jumped out to an early lead off the first of a pair of big innings, beginning in the second frame. However, the Sharks dug deep for a response just one inning later. After starter
Jarret Krzyzanowski made quick work of the Buccaneers in the opening frame, Barry drew blood the second time around, capped by a two-out, three-run homer out to left field by third baseman Joel Alvarez to put the Sharks in a 4-0 hole.
A would-be
Mike Rojas RBI triple came off the books in the second after a catch/no-catch call was reversed on Derek Smolenski's diving score-stopping grab. However, the Sharks used the motivation to get on track in the third – a three-run inning started on
Brandon Chinea's first-pitch double deep in the left center alley. With two runners aboard,
Nathan Chevalier followed with an RBI groundout chopped over the pitcher, putting NSU on the scoreboard.
Garrett Wolforth launched an RBI double down the left line and
Christian Demby added a sacrifice fly to trim the deficit to a single run into the middle innings.
Another spurt off offense in the fifth allowed the Bucs to create some breathing room, but a big strike by JC Garcia on a two-run home run extended Barry back out to four runs.
Facing a steepened deficit, the Sharks were unable to capitalize on opportunities against the Barry bullpen, which held NSU to just an
Ian Acevedo sacrifice fly across the final six innings.
STATS OF THE GAME:
- Krzyzanowski (0-1) went 4.0 innings with six hits and four runs for the loss.
- Making his second appearance in two days against Barry, Joe Smeton struck out two Bucs with no runs in 1.1 innings
- Duncan Pastore, Isaac Lopez and Anthony Difede all made their 2019 debuts on the mound, the latter two holding BU without a score or hit across 1.2 frames.
- Barry outhit the Sharks 12-7.
- Wolforth led the Sharks on 2-for-5 hitting, scoring twice with one RBI – registering NSU's first triple of the year.
- The Sharks recorded four errors on the night to Barry's one.
- NSU left eight runners aboard on the night, while the Sharks pitching staff stranded 10 Barry runners.
FROM COACH GREG BROWN:
- "I'm disappointed with the result, obviously," Brown said. "But I think we've done some really good things. We pitched out of some jams. We had some situational defense that I thought was good. We've just got to stop with the miscues and I think that's something we're going to get better at. This team's got a lot of good elements to it."
