BOCA RATON, Fla. – No. 7 Nova Southeastern women's tennis saw its toughest challenge of the season on Sunday morning at the South County Regional Park Tennis Center, fighting past the NAIA's No. 2 team – The Sharks triumphed in a 4-3 win to keep their streak and perfect season alive at 13-0.
With just three days until the next Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, the Sharks have been putting on quite a showing in the early going -- NSU has registered the most consecutive wins since 2015-16 and the best start in the same span.
Doubles
- The Sharks had to fight back in a hotly-contested doubles team point after falling in No. 3 doubles, but No. 12 ITA pair Ana Navas and Daniela Obando delivered for NSU, beating out Sarah Schaerer and Lorene Foerste for the 1-1 tie.
- No. 2 doubles clinched the team point, as Sarah Wardenburg and Natalie Espinal made their push in tiebreakers with Daniela Farfan and Emma Henriksen to claim the 7-6 win and the team doubles point.
Singles
- Facing a 2-0 singles deficit after two finishes, sophomore Chantal Nosievici delivered a key win in the fifth flight, topping Foerste in a 6-3, 6-1 win to put the Sharks on the board.
- Although the Seahawks took a 3-1 lead in singles, the top flights came through in the clutch, first with No. 13 ITA freshman Natalie Espinal going to the tiebreaker and triumphing over Farfan - who is ranked fifth nationally in the NAIA. Making just her fourth appearance in the top flight, Espinal earned the 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 win to put the game on the final match.
- Rising to the pressure, Obando saved five set points in the second set tiebreaker to collect the 6-4, 7-6 tiebreaker win and the deciding point in the 4-3 team victory.
From Coach Doug Neagle
"This was the absolute toughest test of the year," Neagle said. "Our kids pulled this out by pure fight. Incredible match from our freshman Natalie, coming back from a set down at No. 1 today and also Dani getting us the deciding point in the tiebreaker. Both teams left it all out there today and it was hot!"
Up Next: For the first time since February 24, the Sharks will be back on the their home court at the NSU Tennis Complex, playing host to Sonoma State out of California on Thursday, March 21 at noon.
