No. 7 Sharks Add Historic 18th Win with Sweep of St. Thomas

The Sharks match the 2014-15 win total, reaching the mark just the third time in program history

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 7 Nova Southeastern tennis team (18-2) proved dominant in its midweek sweep of NAIA opponent St. Thomas (2-10) on Wednesday at the NSU Tennis Complex. With the win, the Sharks reach 18 wins for just the third time in program history and match the final tally from the 2014-15 campaign.

Doubles
  • The Sharks quickly dispatched the Bobcats' doubles pairs, led off by sophomore Ivana Djordjevic and junior Sarah Wardenburg, making their doubles debut together in the second flight with a straight-sets victory over Mariah Bastos and Giovanna Paschoalin.
  • Sophomore Chantal Nosievici and junior Isabella Lowrey followed suit and delivered the doubles team point with a first-flight victory over Andrea Gonzalez and Thais Shibata, 6-1.
  • Freshman Caitlyn Khan and sophomore Alexandra Yeardley were up 3-2 in the threes but the match went unfinished.
Singles
  • Wardenburg stayed right on pace and again led off for the Sharks with a win, downing Paschoalin in No. 3 singles to start NSU toward the sweep, 6-0, 6-1.
  • Earning the most wins by an NSU player since 2009 (Ulia Talalenko), Nosievici wasn't far behind, producing a straight 6-0, 6-0 sweep Manami Maehama in the second flight.
  • Clinching the match for NSU, Yeardley also went 6-0, 6-0 over Shibata to move to 2-0 in singles on the year.
  • With a 6-0, 6-3 win over Bastos, Djordjevic moved to 4-2 on the season.
  • Diane Follin-Arbelet defeated Gonzalez, 6-0, 6-2 in her first match playing in the first flight.
  • Khan rounded out the sweep with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Emily Perretta at the sixth spot.
From Coach Doug Neagle
"The entire team played hard and smart today," Neagle said. "Ivana was solid in singles and doubles. It's nice reaching this many wins for the first time in a long time, but our focus remains on our goals for a deep postseason run."

Up Next: Just two regular season matches remain for the Sharks and Senior Day looms at the NSU Tennis Complex, facing Eckerd in Sunday's home finale. The regular season concludes on the road at No. 2 Barry.
